Distinguished Clinical Service Award
[Daniel Lam]Dr. Daniel Lam, clinical professor (Nephrology) has received the Distinguished Clinical Service Award from the American Society of Nephrology. This midcareer award recognizes individuals who exemplify leadership and excellence in the practice of nephrology and combine the art of medicine with the skills demanded by the scientific body of knowledge in service to patients.

Distinguished Faculty Award
[Mazyar Shadman]Dr. Mazyar Shadman, associate professor (Hematology and Oncology) is the 2025 recipient of the Binaytara Distinguished Faculty Award for improving cancer care access and education. Binaytara's mission is to improve healthcare in resource-poor communities and enhance cancer care worldwide by educating healthcare providers and community members, advocating for better access to care, and conducting research to develop innovative program models and services that promote equitable access to healthcare.

Fellow Impact Award
[Alison Bays]Congratulations to Dr. Alison Bays, assistant professor (Rheumatology) who is the 2025 recipient of the Fellow Impact Award. [Laura Feemster]Dr. Laura Feemster, associate professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) has been elected Chair of the American Thoracic Society's Behavioral Science and Health Services Research Assembly (2026-2029). In this role, she will advise the ATS Board of Directors and lead the Assembly's efforts to advance behavioral health research, education, mentorship, and clinical care for patients with pulmonary, critical care, and sleep disorders.

Dr. Vishesh Kapur, professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) has been elected secretary treasurer of the American Association of Sleep Medicine, the largest professional organization representing sleep medicine specialists.

[Radhika Narla]Dr. Radhika Narla, associate professor (Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition) has been appointed to serve on the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) Professional Practice Committee. Acknowledging the urgent need to close the gap between current knowledge on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of bone diseases and its application in clinical practice, this committee is tasked with identifying the needs of ASBMR members working in academic or community clinical settings.


Research news
Transforming systems of care to address HIV, HIV risk, and substance use disorders in prisons
[Helen Jack]Dr. Helen Jack, assistant professor (General Internal Medicine) is PI of an NIH Director's New Innovator Award, "Transforming systems of care to address HIV, HIV risk, and substance use disorders in prisons." The four-year, $2.3 million NIDA Avenir grant supports early career researchers conducting high-risk, high-reward research on HIV and substance use.

This initiative will pave the way for research aimed at enhancing care quality and generating knowledge on patient experiences to improve prison healthcare nationwide.

Clinical news
Purging of CDC Vaccine Advisory Committee
[Helen Chu]On Thursday, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, held a virtual press conference on U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s unprecedented decision on Monday to fire every single member of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).

Dr. Helen Chu, professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) joined Senator Murray for the press conference. Chu was a member of ACIP until Monday-when she was fired by Secretary Kennedy alongside the entire panel of experts. Senator Murray and Dr. Chu laid out just how unprecedented and unthinkably dangerous this move is, and what it means for the future of vaccine policy and public health.

QI and Patient Safety education programs
The Center for Scholarship in Patient Care Quality & Safety is currently accepting applications for two educational programs:

The QI Scholars Program<https://bit.ly/42J1iCJ> is an advanced, year-long course focuses on completing and publishing a rigorous QI research project. Participants receive mentorship, data support, and attend 12 hands-on seminars. The Certificate Program in Patient Safety<https://bit.ly/3N8s3Ll> is an 8-month training course for healthcare professionals of all backgrounds and from any organization who are beginner to intermediate in their QI knowledge and skills.
