Dr. Shiv Bhandari, clinical instructor (General Internal Medicine) and chair of the DOM LGBTQ+ Council recently shared his perspective<https://bit.ly/4n5D4y8>. “There is no one size fits all in the LGBTQ+ community. We are a community that celebrates the common thread that unites us, as well as the differences that make each of us in the community unique individuals,” he says.

New Residency Program Directors
The Seattle IM Residency Program will welcome two new program directors on July 1:

[cid:image045.jpg at 01DBE202.637ED4F0]Dr. Collette Abbott, assistant professor (General Internal Medicine) will be associate program director for inpatient medicine at Harborview Medical Center. Abbott is an outstanding educator and clinician with the Harborview hospital medicine group, and she brings phenomenal experience mentoring learners. She was a chief resident in global health in Naivasha, Kenya in 2019-20 and is the current global health pathway director.


[cid:image046.jpg at 01DBE202.637ED4F0]Dr. Mack Holmberg, clinical instructor (General Internal Medicine) will be associate program director for equity, diversity and inclusion. Holmberg is an outpatient attending at the Roosevelt GIM Clinic and was an inpatient chief resident at Harborview in 2023-24. He is a fierce advocate for residents and is passionate about helping foster inclusion and belonging to our community.

Research Fellows Orientation Course
Registration is now open for the annual Department of Medicine Workshop: “Surviving and Thriving During the Research Years<https://bit.ly/44r1GKj>” on Aug. 6 at South Lake Union. This one-day in-person workshop provides practical guidance on career development, mentorship, manuscript writing and funding strategies (including a live mock study section) led by experts across the Department of Medicine.

Designed for physician and PhD research trainees and early-stage faculty spanning from those who are just starting in research to those preparing to submit a career development award, this workshop is also great networking opportunity to meet other early career and senior researchers. There is no charge to attend this course and breakfast and lunch are provided. 2025 Evergreen Fund awardees
Six Department of Medicine faculty have received funding for early-stage research projects as part of Fred Hutch’s Evergreen Fund, an internal grant program designed to accelerate translational science and foster strategic industry collaborations.

The fund offers two tiers of awards: Pilot Awards for projects in the earliest stages of development, and Beyond Pilot Awards for projects that have already generated compelling data and are poised for industry engagement.

The Career Awards for Medical Scientists (CAMS) is a prestigious and competitive program that offers $700,000 in funding over five years to support physician-scientists dedicated to academic careers. The award is designed to help bridge the transition from advanced postdoctoral or fellowship training to the early stages of faculty service.
