Awards
HAARVI team wins Distinguished Staff Award
[cid:image003.jpg at 01DAA879.3BD25440]Congratulations to the HAARVI (Hospitalized or Ambulatory Adults with Respiratory Viral Infections) Team on being named recipients of the 2024 Distinguished Staff Award for Impact. The HAARVI Team's research - which includes the development of the earliest COVID-19 vaccines and antibodies and the ongoing study of long COVID and individual vaccine responses - has been instrumental in understanding and mitigating the impact of the pandemic.

[cid:image008.png at 01DAA879.3BD25440]Dr. Elizabeth Loggers, clinical associate professor (Hematology and Oncology) and medical director for Fred Hutch Palliative Care, was recognized as an Emerging Leader in Hospice and Palliative Medicine by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAPHM). Established in 2014, this award recognizes accomplished early career professionals and the next generation of hospice and palliative care leaders.

[cid:image010.jpg at 01DAA879.3BD25440]Dr. Bart Scott, professor (Hematology and Oncology) has been named the Miklos Kohary and Natalia Zimonyi Kohary Endowed Chair, established in 2018 to support myelodysplastic syndrome research. Scott specializes in MDS, a chronic bone marrow problem that leads to low levels of healthy blood cells in the bloodstream, and related conditions such as myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). Funding associated with the endowed chair will allow him to devote more time to MDS research, specifically helping to support clinical trial development and start-up costs for trials.

[cid:image012.jpg at 01DAA879.3BD25440]Dr. Ari Leonhard, fellow (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) has been selected by the American Thoracic Society (ATS) for the 2024 Academic Sleep Pulmonary Integrated Research/Clinical Fellowship (ASPIRE) fellowship. The ATS ASPIRE fellowship is a novel training program to develop the next generation of pulmonary and sleep physician-scientists and leaders.

[cid:image014.jpg at 01DAA879.3BD25440]Dr. Katherine Ritchey, clinical assistant professor (Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine) has been accepted into the 2024-25 Tideswell AGS Emerging Leaders in Aging Program. The Emerging Leaders in Aging (ELIA) program is a national leadership development program that trains a cadre of interprofessional leaders focused on the health and well-being of older people.

Teaching Scholars Program
The applications deadline has been extended for the Center for Learning and Innovation in Medical Education (CLIME) Teaching Scholars Program, a professional development program for educators in the health professions who have a passion for teaching and a desire to become academic leaders. The ten-month certificate program consists of interactive learning sessions, scholarly projects, and a professional peer group. Applications are due May 31. Congratulations to the UW Pulmonary Vascular Disease program - the pulmonary hypertension team was successfully reaccredited as the only Center for Comprehensive Pulmonary Hypertension Care in the WWAMI region. Comments from the auditors included: "the PH Team is extraordinarily dedicated and...has worked passionately and seamlessly to provide excellent patient care," "they have a very strong academic presence and publication record with a reputation as a leading research center," and "the team is very involved in PH education locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally."
Strategic plan updates
[cid:image020.jpg at 01DAA879.3BD25440]As we wrap-up year 2 and evaluate the progress of our 5-year strategic plan<https://bit.ly/461DHiV>, we want to celebrate the achievements of our strategic plan workgroups. In 2023, the groups identified 41 total initiatives-13 successfully completed and 25 in progress nearing completion.

The 2024-2025 Strategic Plan roadmap will continue to focus on key strategies that nurture and support individuals across the department.

Professional development focus group - participants requested
We are seeking faculty and staff participants for a professional development focus group to provide feedback to help guide decisions and make improvements across the department. The focus groups will be virtual and 1 hour. Your feedback will not be shared in any identifiable way. You will then be sent a poll to collect your availability and pair you with a session that best reflects your needs.
