Run and Walk with Pride

Since its beginning in 1983, the mission of RWWP has been to provide an event in which LGBTQIA+ athletes could compete, while also serving as a fundraiser for local LGBTQIA+ non-profit organizations. Trans Pride
Started in 2013, Trans Pride Seattle<https://bit.ly/4bwpcH2> is an annual event organized by Gender Justice League in collaboration with hundreds of local organizers, volunteers, and groups who support the Seattle-area TwoSpirit, Trans & Gender Diverse (2STGD) community. June 28.

Education news
Distinguished Teacher Award
[cid:image007.jpg at 01DAADF6.DDF4A9D0]Dr. Kristen Patton, professor (Cardiology) has received the 2024 Distinguished Teacher award from the Heart Rhythm Society. This award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated outstanding skills as a teacher in the field of cardiac pacing and/or electrophysiology.

Physician-Scientist Learning Pathway
The Internal Medicine Residency Program's Physician-Scientist Learning Pathway provides dedicated research time, mentorship, a core curriculum, and professional development activities to interested residents planning careers as physician-scientists.

Please welcome the four new members of the new Physician-Scientist Learning Pathway:

Dr. Yaacoub Chahine is interested in advancing our understanding of cardiac arrhythmias. He is particularly intrigued by the transformative potential of artificial intelligence and virtual cardiac simulations in predicting outcomes of ablation procedures and personalizing patient care.

Dr. Ishani Joshi is planning a research-intensive career bridging her interests in clinical research and epidemiology to improve cardiac and critical care for vulnerable populations. During residency, she hopes to build skills in statistical analysis and research methodology, and enhance her health equity lens for her current and future work.

Dr. Megan Maurano is planning to continue to pursue clinical work alongside research studying immune regulation in the kidney. In residency, she hopes to expand her research experience by participating in clinical research.

Dr. Astrid Strasik is planning a career in Rheumatology and aspires to not only push the boundaries of our understanding of intricate systemic diseases but also to actively bridge gaps in healthcare, thereby leaving her mark on the landscape of medical progress.

QI and Patient Safety education programs
The Center for Scholarship in Patient Care Quality & Safety is currently accepting applications for two educational programs:

QI Scholars Program<https://bit.ly/42J1iCJ>
This competitive year-long course is in-depth and advanced, centered around completing and publishing a rigorous QI research project. Participants receive support from a mentorship and data team and attend 12 half-day hands-on seminars. With only 10-20 total participants from across the UW Medicine and Seattle Children's community, this intensive program allows for significant 1:1 support and collaborative learning among Scholars and a network of alumni.

This 8-month training course is ideal for healthcare professionals of all backgrounds and from any organization who are beginner to intermediate in their QI knowledge and skills. Participants learn core quality, safety, and equity principles through 6 full-day conferences and gain hands-on experience by implementing a project throughout the course. Register as an individual or put together a team working on the same project.


Research news
Population Health Initiative grants
The University of Washington Population Health Initiative has awarded 13 Tier 1 pilot grants to teams of interdisciplinary researchers representing 11 UW schools and colleges as well as several community-based partners.

Funded projects that include DOM members:


* "Identity safety in medicine: a qualitative study to elicit patient perspectives and develop a framework to apply in clinical settings and research" (Drs. Crystal Brown, Justin Bullock, Brian Wood)


* "Clinical and structural approached to addressing substance use disorder in HIV care in Zimbabwe: Formative Work" (Dr. Helen Jack)


* "A community co-led epidemiologic study of methamphetamine use patterns and associated factors among cisgender men and transgender people who have sex with men" (Dr. Matthew Golden)


* "Individual and community-level effects from climate change driven heat and wildfire smoke co-exposures among a Washington state agricultural community" (Dr. Coralynn Sack)

Dr. Barak Gaster, professor (General Internal Medicine) is lead author of "Evaluating Cognitive Impairment in a Large Health Care System: The Cognition in Primary Care Program<https://bit.ly/3UPONDz>" in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. DOM co-authors are Joshua Liao and Amy Hsu.

Dr. W. Conrad Liles, professor and associate chair, and Dr. Joshua Hill, associate professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) are authors a new UpToDate chapter "Evaluation and prevention of infections associated with biologic agents and JAK inhibitors in adults<https://bit.ly/4dKWO5r>."
