Research news
Secret to tamping down GVHD may lie in microbial genetics
The genetic variety of our microbiome may be a missing component of graft-vs.-host disease, according to preclinical work from Fred Hutch investigators. They found that after bone marrow transplant, donor T cells can zero in on bacterial components and exacerbate GVHD independently of how closely the genetics of donor and recipient match.

The results were recently published in the journal Immunity<https://bit.ly/4c3uB8D>. Dr. Albert Yeh, acting instructor, is lead author and Dr. Geoffrey Hill, professor (Hematology and Oncology) is senior author.

Could your medical record predict cardiac arrest risk?
[cid:image018.jpg at 01DAC3FB.26E12D70]Until now, known risk factors for cardiac arrest have been limited to cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension and high cholesterol. Dr. Neal Chatterjee, associate professor (Cardiology) is lead author of a recent study that identifies a range of new factors - for instance, single marital status and alcohol and substance abuse - that also are highly associated with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA).

"Our current understanding of risk for cardiac arrest is based on data collected decades ago in populations that don't necessarily represent our diverse communities today. There is a scientific need to better understand the factors underlying this public health problem," Chatterjee said.

The study employs machine-learning models scoured electronic health records of more than 1.5 million patients to pinpoint factors associated with OHCA.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger: Bacteria that withstand fungal 'bully' gain resistance to last-resort antibiotic
The fungus Candida albicans can make life difficult for Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria - but those bacteria that adapt to the fungus become more resistant to a last-resort antibiotic. The key to this phenomenon, Fred Hutch scientists discovered, is the mineral magnesium.

[cid:image020.png at 01DAC3FB.26E12D70]"Our study really reveals a new mechanism with the potential to explain how bacteria might acquire antibiotic resistance during polymicrobial infections," said lead author Dr. Phoebe Hsieh, postdoctoral fellow in Fred Hutch's Malik Lab and the University of Washington's Dandekar Lab. Dr. Ajai Dandekar, associate professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine) is co-senior author of the paper recently published in PLoS Biology<https://bit.ly/3XC0n8m>.
