Awards
[cid:image019.jpg at 01D916E4.DD5A0880]Dr. Edward Boyko, professor (General Internal Medicine) is the recipient of the 2022 Peter Bennett Award. This award honors Dr. Peter Bennett's many contributions to the epidemiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus and its complications arising from his greater than 50-year experience working among the Pima Indians of Southern Arizona. It is given in recognition of a major and longstanding contribution to the field of diabetes epidemiology.

[cid:image020.png at 01D916E4.DD5A0880]Dr. Mary Flowers, professor (Medical Oncology), longtime medical director of the Long-Term Follow-Up (LTFU) program, a comprehensive survivorship program for blood and marrow transplant recipients, is retiring from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.

"She was doing research in this field way before others became interested," FTFU program research director Dr. Stephanie Lee said. "She was a pioneer. [cid:image021.jpg at 01D916E4.DD5A0880]Dr. Michael Linenberger, professor (Hematology) retires from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center at the end of 2022. He came to the UW in 1986 as a hematology fellow and has since had many leadership roles including medical director of apheresis and cellular therapy for Fred Hutch as well as for the Fred Hutch Cellular Processing Facility and the regional marrow-collection center for the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). Since 2011, Linenberger has led the UW Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program, with which he will continue teaching as an emeritus professor. Learn more from Hutch News<https://bit.ly/3FPFegE>.


Research news
[cid:image022.jpg at 01D916E4.DD5A0880]Dr. Chi Hung, assistant professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine), has received an R01 from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for his project "Functional diversity of lung pericytes in lung injury". The study focuses on novel roles of lung pericytes in endothelial activation and local inflammation in viral lung injury models. Co-investigators include Drs. William Altemeier, Sina Gharib, and Charles Frevert.

Dr. Andrew Coveler, associate professor (Medical Oncology) is co-author of "Sotorasib in KRAS p.G12C-Mutated Advanced Pancreatic Cancer<http://bit.ly/3Wwgfpg>" in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Andrew Cowan, associate professor (Medical Oncology) is co-author of "Stem cell mobilization yields with daratumumab and lenalidomide-containing quadruplet induction therapy in newly diagnosed multiple myeloma: findings from the MASTER and GRIFFIN trials<https://bit.ly/3FYnHmy>" in Transplantation and Cellular Therapy.

Drs. Lucas Donovan, assistant professor, David Au, professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) and Linnaea Schuttner (General Internal Medicine) are co-authors of "Effect of a Remotely Delivered Self-directed Behavioral Intervention on Body Weight and Physical Health Status Among Adults With Obesity: The D-ELITE Randomized Clinical Trial<https://bit.ly/3vbxJvx>" in JAMA.

Dr. Christine Johnson, associate professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) is co-author of "Estimated economic burden of genital herpes and HIV attributable to herpes simplex virus type 2 infections in 90 low- and middle-income countries: A modeling study<https://bit.ly/3VgNYBT>" in PLoS Medicine.

Drs. Edward Libby, associate professor emeritus, Andrew Cowan, associate professor, Sarah Lee, assistant professor, Damian Green, associate professor, Leona Holmberg, professor (Medical Oncology) and Mary Kwok, clinical associate professor (Hematology) are co-authors of "Radiographic Response of Solitary Plasmacytomas After Conformal Radiotherapy May Be Delayed: Outcomes in the 3D Era<https://bit.ly/3YNbHwI>" in the American Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Dr. Paul Robertson, emeritus clinical professor (Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition) is editor-in-chief of the recently published DeGroot Endocrinology, 8th edition, a compilation of 2232 pages and considered internationally to be the most authoritative textbook of its kind. A number of the division's faculty participated as chapter authors.

Dr. Stuart Shankland, professor and Jeffrey Pippin, senior research scientist (Nephrology) are co-authors of "Loss of Epigenetic Information as a Cause of Mammalian Aging<https://bit.ly/3HVdmKF>" in Cell.

Dr. Namrata Singh (Rheumatology) is lead author of "Rituximab is associated with worse COVID-19 outcomes in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: A retrospective, nationally sampled cohort study from the U.S. National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C)<https://bit.ly/3hONqpo>" in the Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatology.
