Here’s an interesting article in Smithsonian Magazine. Evidently the town lights confuse the pufflings and they fly toward town rather than sea when they leave the nest burrow.

The Icelanders collect the young birds and point them in the right direction. Seems to be an annual event. The article doesn’t mention if they also turn off town lights or otherwise dim or shroud them during the period.
