Hi All,

I would like to draw your attention to two upcoming workshops to develop a
community plan for developing experimental rock deformation technical
capabilities for subduction zone research. We hope for participation from
all disciplines that collect or use experimental data in their
subduction-related research.

*SZ4D virtual mini-workshop on experimental rock deformation data needs*
Tuesday (tomorrow) June 14 at 9AM PT/12PM ET
Virtual

Virtual mini-workshop on the experimental rock deformation data required to
address subduction zone hazards. This 2 hour workshop will be held *Tuesday
June 14 at 9AM PT/12PM ET.*

Progress answering the SZ4D driving science questions on subduction zone
hazards will require advancements in experimental rock deformation
technical capabilities. The need for technical advances is included in the
SZ4D draft implementation plan <https://www.sz4d.org/projects-3>. To help
guide the next steps of SZ4D, we are hosting a mini-workshop for the broad
interdisciplinary community to provide input on the greatest data needs,
which will guide plans for technical development.

An ad hoc committee of experimentalists will use the input from this
virtual workshop to develop a draft plan over the summer. We will be
hosting a one day in-person workshop at the end of the Rock Deformation
Gordon Research Conference to get community input (see below).

---------

*SZ4D in-person workshop on experimental rock deformation data and
technical needs *
August 12-13, 2022 (right after Gordon Research Conference on Rock
deformation)
Portland, Maine

The application for this in-person workshop is now open and will close *June
24*. Applicants will be notified of the results by the end of June.

This one-day in person workshop
<https://www.sz4d.org/workshop-technical-advancements-exp-research> will
take place at the Embassy Suites at the Jetport in Portland Maine
immediately following the GRC on Rock Deformation. Participants can take
the bus offered by the GRC to the Portland Jetport for the start of this
workshop at 12pm on June 12. The workshop will end at 12 pm on Saturday
August 13. All workshop fees, meals, and accommodations for the night of
August 12 will be covered by NSF funding to SZ4D. Participants are
responsible for transportation costs, although partial support may be
available.
