ENVIR 302: Communication for Environmental Studies



Employment Period: We hope to hire graduate Predoctoral Instructors (PDIs)
to work on an annual basis (9/16/25-6/15/26) for ENVIR 302. We may also
hire a PDI for one or more quarters for any of the courses listed above.



Position Description: Environmental Studies at the Program on the
Environment (PoE) is an interdisciplinary program emphasizing undergraduate
education in environmental studies. The courses vary – please see below. The
PDIs hired will serve as the primary instructor for these classes. Although
considerable course materials are provided, the PDI will have the freedom
to develop and use new materials, will present all course content, and be
responsible for grading.



ENVIR 240 (5 credits): Develops students' understanding of the ecological
connections between food production, human health, and planetary
sustainability. Teaches basic skills needed for food production in urban
areas and the ethics behind sustainable urban agriculture, including a
hands-on component on the UW Farm. This is a course with a lecture and a lab
where the predoctoral instructor will supervise a graduate TA and two Peer
TAs.



ENVIR 302 (5 credits): helps students develop the skills necessary to
engage, analyze, write, and speak about complex environmental issues in a
variety of disciplinary contexts with particular attention to communication
issues such as audience, genre and tone. The course focuses on reading,
writing, presentation, and critical analysis of written material. This
is a process-based
composition course that typically has weekly papers of various lengths.

Predoctoral Instructor Responsibilities include:

lectures

Arranging lecture and discussion logistics and activities



Requirements:

academic standing as a UW Graduate Student and eligibility to hold
a Predoctoral
Instructor Position

availability for full appointment time frame and available for the time
the course is offered


-

previous college teaching experience


-

excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills



Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum
qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a
license/certification/registration.



Compensation: $3,291/mo. This is a GSA position governed by the UAW
contract paid in accordance with TA/RA/SA salary schedules. These rates are
subject to bargaining changes effective fall 2025. The most current rates

Benefits:

Most of the major components of tuition are covered through your
appointment, however, Graduate TA's are responsible for paying some
additional required fees.  The appointment carries a waiver of the
quarterly operating fee, building fee, U‐PASS fee and technology fee.  Your
appointment also provides you and your dependents with medical, dental and
vision eligibility and coverage under the Graduate Appointee Insurance Plan
as described on the UW Human Resources website
