Happy fall, everyone!
ACORN (Actionable Community Oriented Research eNgagement)<https://pcc.uw.edu/research/acorn-program/> is a group of grad students under the Program on Climate Change that work to facilitate connections between climate-focused graduate students and community partners to develop collaborative climate and environmental science research projects.
This year, ACORN will function a little differently by welcoming members from both the PCC Graduate Student Steering Committee (P-GraSC) or anyone who would like to commit to volunteering with the group. ACORN group members work to find and facilitate climate-solution focused research projects co-produced by community organizations and graduate students and/or postdocs at UW.
About ACORN
In addition to supporting community goals, ACORN projects enable students to enrich their research experience, broaden their networks, and apply quantitative, analytical, and communication skills beyond the boundaries of their primary academic focus. It needs some updating, but visit our website<https://pcc.uw.edu/research/acorn-program/ongoing-acorn-projects/> for more information on past and current ongoing ACORN projects! Members of ACORN help facilitate these projects by acting as ‘liaisons’ between students and community partners. In order to effectively approach collaborative science, all liaisons go through training - an aspect that the group would like to enhance this coming year.
How do I join ACORN? ?
1. Via the PCC Graduate Student Steering Committee
The PCC Graduate Student Steering Committee (P-GraSC) is a group of ~30 grad students from a diverse group of departments. The mission of P-GraSC is to form a coherent and organized graduate student steering body of the Program on Climate Change<https://pcc.uw.edu/>. P-GraSC is currently seeking nominations to begin a position starting this fall. The group meets about once per quarter and is a great opportunity to build community and get involved with climate-related projects as a grad student on campus. If you are interested in joining ACORN via P-GraSC, apply here<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfEnifz0PfqOi2FRw4h1IOhcSfousA9-S5jc5xwm8-Y35xf_g/viewform?usp=sf_link> before October 21st.
2. As a separate commitment
ACORN is also hoping to grow its influence within the UW community and build stronger and more sustainable relationships with external community groups. Achieving such lofty goals requires a steady group of enthusiastic members from across the university! Committee participants will be expected to attend (on average) monthly ACORN meetings but will not be required to attend other P-GraSC events. If you are interested in participating this way, please respond to this email and let us know your general availability this quarter! We hope to have a welcome meeting later this month, or early next month. It’s that easy!
Also feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
Stella Heflin, Naomi Wharton, and Nina Buzby
