Dear all,

We are excited to announce a talk that you might be interested in. As part of the ACMS seminar series, we will have Prof. Marina Meila from Statistics talk on Thursday, February 9:

1:00-1:50pm

CSE2 G20

Our guest speaker will be Professor Marina Meila from the Statistics department. She will talk about

Unsupervised Learning in the age of Big Data.

Abstract:

Unsupervised Learning (UL), that is, learning without labeled data, is the least developed arm of Machine Learning. In other words, understanding the structure of data, is the next big milestone in machine learning. I will explain why this is so, with a motivation on the sciences, and how the data collected by big scientific experiments is both a challenge and an opportunity to advance UL.

Then I will go on to describe some of the questions that my group is working on, such as: how to know when a clustering is correct, non-linear dimension reduction, and modeling preferences, and how a group of ACMS students are participating in them.
