Spotlight: Center for Scholarship in Patient Care Quality & Safety
[Thomas Gallagher and Andrew White]Established in 2012, the UW Medicine Center for Scholarship in Patient Care Quality & Safety brings together clinicians, researchers, and staff to advance health system science and accelerate the adoption of evidence-based practices.
The Center's education programs<https://bit.ly/44FBwnu> provide participants with an immersive QI and patient safety curriculum that helps equip them with the knowledge and skills to translate ideas into scalable projects. Both programs - the Certificate Program in Patient Safety & Quality and the QI Scholars Program - are currently accepting nominations.
"Every healthcare provider must be fluent in basic principles of patient safety and quality improvement. For many, work in quality improvement and patient safety will also be an important element of their academic careers," said Dr. Thomas Gallagher, professor (General Internal Medicine) and associate chair for quality, safety, and value, who founded and led the center for 13 years.
Dr. Andrew White, professor (General Internal Medicine), course director for the center's Certificate Program in Patient Safety and Quality, is stepping into the role of interim director this fall.

First Cancer Screening Research Network study launched
[The Vanguard Study Logo - Testing a new way to screen for cancer]Fred Hutch Cancer Center is leading the newly launched Vanguard Study<https://bit.ly/44WtwNN>, a national study of a new type of blood test that screens for several different cancers called multi-cancer detection (MCD) tests. Researchers will evaluate whether these blood tests will help people ages 45 to 75 find cancer early when it may be easier to treat.
This is the first study of the Cancer Screening Research Network<https://bit.ly/4eVupdX> (CSRN), a nationwide network that will run trials aimed at improving cancer screening that is funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health. Fred Hutch serves as the Coordinating and Communications Center as well as the Statistics and Data Management Center.
"We need to rigorously evaluate multi-cancer detection tests to understand if they're effective and accurate cancer screening tools for everyone," said Dr. Scott Ramsey, professor (General Internal Medicine) and principal investigator of the CSRN and cancer researcher at Fred Hutch Cancer Center.

Study spotlights cardiac arrest survival in King County
[Thomas Rea]For many years, Seattle and surrounding King County have shared a reputation of being among the best places in the United States to experience a cardiac arrest - due to the expert, resolute efforts of stakeholders at many levels.
The contributors to this achievement have not rested on laurels. Newly published research<https://bit.ly/40pUNXv> shows that, in King County, resuscitated individuals' survival rate improved significantly between 2001 and 2020. In a study of 25,118 cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, survival to hospital discharge improved from 14.7% (2001-2005) to 18.9% (2016-2020). For the subset of people who require a defibrillator shock to restore their heartbeat, survival increased from 35% to 48%.
Nationally, the survival rate among people who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is about 10%, according to the American Red Cross.
"Fundamentally, it is hard to resuscitate people. It takes continual coordination: The prehospital care providers have to do everything correctly to get a heartbeat back as quickly as possible. Hospital providers have to extend the care and let the patient's brain recover and treat the underlying issue that caused the event," said Dr. Thomas Rea, professor (General Internal Medicine) and senior author of the paper.
