Joyce Wipf Rising Star Awards
[Sarah Leyde and Liz Schackmann]Congratulations to the 2025 recipients of the Joyce Wipf Rising Star Awards, Drs. Sarah Leyde, assistant professor, and Elizabeth Schackmann, assistant professor (General Internal Medicine).

The Rising Star Awards were established in recognition of Dr. Joyce Wipf's legacy as a clinician educator scholar with trail-blazing innovations in medical education and training programs. As a changemaker, she led the creation of resident as teacher curricula, studies of burnout in medical residents, and interprofessional learning established in the VA Center of Excellence in Primary Care Education.

Call for nominations: Marvin Turck Award
Nominations are currently open for the Department of Medicine Marvin Turck Outstanding Teaching Award. This is a career achievement award to honor individuals whose long-term contributions have defined departmental standards for patient care and teaching.

This award celebrates Dr. Marvin Turck, whose energy, enthusiastic teaching, remarkable clinical knowledge, humor, and support for students, housestaff, fellows, and faculty inspired learners and faculty for over 50 years.

Shireesha Dhanireddy named Associate Chief Medical Officer
[Shireesha Dhanireddy]Dr. Shireesha Dhanireddy, professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) has been named UW Medicine’s Associate Chief Medical Officer, effective July 1, 2025. In this role, she will provide physician leadership in the development and integration of UW Medicine system-wide programs with an emphasis on clinical care and quality in the ambulatory setting. “Dr. Dhanireddy brings a deep commitment to exceptional patient care and mitigation of barriers that result in healthcare inequities,” said Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anneliese Schleyer.

Lily Li new Allergy Section Head
Dr. Lily Li, assistant professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) has accepted the role of Interim Allergy Section Head effective Oct. 1. Dr. Li came to UW from [Lily Li] Harvard/Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 2023 as a physician-scientist and has since demonstrated exceptional leadership within the Allergy Section. She was named Top Doctor by Seattle Met in 2024. In addition to her clinical work and research related to drug allergies, she actively contributes to several committees at the national level, including the World Allergy Organization Task Force on Classification and Diagnosis of NSAID Hypersensitivity Reactions and AAAAI Mentorship Program committees.

2026 Parker B. Francis Fellowship Program: Call for pre-proposals
The Parker B. Francis Fellowship Program<https://bit.ly/4eClj5w> will start accepting proposals on Oct. 10. Two applicants from the Department of Medicine will be selected from pre-proposals to submit a full application to the foundation. Pre-proposals are due Aug. 15. Vice Chair for Research Dr. Conrad Liles will select the two proposals and notify applicants. Please submit (1-2 pgs. max): Title of research project, advisor, introduction, hypotheses, specific aims, methos, significance and innovation, and references. Also provide a copy of your current NIH biosketch. Send pre-proposals to Conrad Liles<mailto:wcliles at uw.edu>, cc to Isabel Goncalves<mailto:igon14 at uw.edu>.

Bladder Cancer Research Innovation Award
[Andrew Hsieh]Dr. Andrew Hsieh, professor (Hematology and Oncology) has received a 2025 Bladder Cancer Research Innovation Award<https://bit.ly/4lip02V> from the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN). These awards support high risk, high reward projects with great potential to produce breakthroughs in our understanding of bladder cancer. Dr. Hsieh’s research aims to uncover how mutations in other commonly altered genes contribute to diversity in bladder cancer.

2025 Teacher of the Year
[Fionnuala Cormack]Dr. Fionnuala Cormack, clinical associate professor (Nephrology) was selected as the Nephrology Teacher of the Year by the nephrology fellows. This is the second time she has received this honor (she also received it in 2020). Dr. Cormack is nephrology section head at UWMC-Northwest and associate director of the Nephrology Fellowship program.

Dr. Dominique Feterman, clinical assistant professor, is lead author and Dr. Alison Bays, assistant professor (Rheumatology) is senior author of “Delays in Tocilizumab Therapy for Patients With Giant Cell Arteritis in the United States<https://bit.ly/4eEepwH>” in the Journal of Rheumatology. Drs. Susan Graham, professor, and R.
