Joyce Wipf Rising Star Awards
[Jessica Bender and Amy Kennedy]Congratulations to the inaugural recipients of the Joyce Wipf Rising Star Awards, Drs. Jessica Bender, clinical assistant professor, and Amy Kennedy, assistant professor (General Internal Medicine).

The Rising Star Awards were established in recognition of Dr. Joyce Wipf's legacy as a clinician educator scholar with trail-blazing innovations in medical education and training programs. As a changemaker, she led the creation of resident as teacher curricula, studies of burnout in medical residents, and interprofessional learning established in the VA Center of Excellence in Primary Care Education.

Dr. Wipf has made an indelible impact on trainees and faculty, both in clinic and on wards with a culture of simultaneous teaching and learning, patient care excellence, kindness and supportive mentorship.

Mid-Career Achievement Award
[Nisha Bansal]Congratulations to Dr. Nisha Bansal, professor (Nephrology), who is the 2024 recipient of the Mid-Career Achievement Award by the American Heart Association's Council on the Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease. This award recognizes a mid-career investigator active in basic, clinical, translational or population cardiovascular research who made a significant impact on the field of cardiovascular disease as it relates to kidney failure.

[Margaret Walker]Margaret Walker, teaching associate (Gastroenterology) has been recognized as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of PAs (AAPA). Walker earned this national recognition due to her outstanding contributions to patient care and significant dedication to and involvement in the Seattle/Tacoma communities. The Distinguished Fellow program was established by AAPA in 2007 to recognize the exceptional contributions of PAs to the profession through professional achievement, leadership, professional interaction, learning, and community service.

Research news
New endpoint in multiple myeloma could mean faster drug approvals
[Rahul Banerjee]A few months ago, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration voted to accept a new endpoint - MRD, or measurable residual disease - for accelerated approval of treatments for multiple myeloma. "This is good news for patients, says Dr. Rahul Banerjee, assistant professor (Hematology and Oncology). It's a much more sensitive endpoint. When MRD is used as a clinical trial endpoint it means the FDA can approve a drug sooner and we can get it into the hands of patients faster."
