The Association for Hospital Medical Education (AHME) established this day to recognize program coordinators and GME administrators who work to help make residency and fellowship training programs successful. Thank you to all the program managers, administrators and coordinators who work tirelessly on behalf of our residents and fellows.

Faculty spotlight: Lawrence Fong
[Lawrence Fong]Dr. Lawrence Fong, professor (Hematology and Oncology) is the new scientific director of the Immunotherapy Integrated Research Center<https://www.fredhutch.org/en/research/institutes-networks-ircs/immunotherapy-integrated-research-center.html> and Bezos Family Distinguished Scholar in Immunotherapy at Fred Hutch Cancer Center. His research has focused on immunotherapy for more than 30 years. Fong completed his internship and residency at the University of Washington, before joining UCSF, where he founded and led their immunotherapy program, and contributed to the pre-clinical and clinical development of several FDA-approved immunotherapies including immune checkpoint inhibitors. In 2021, he received a seven-year, $4.2 million National Cancer Institute Outstanding Investigator Award for his project, "Determinants of Response to Cancer Immunotherapy<https://reporter.nih.gov/project-details/10299968>."

Research news
A quarter century of lifesaving discoveries in prostate cancer
Insights from the Pacific Northwest Prostate Cancer Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) have transformed patient care and understanding of prostate cancer biology, and supported drug discovery worldwide[Peter Nelson]. The National Cancer Institute created the SPORE program to strengthen ties between bench and bedside and hasten the flow of breakthroughs and insights between them.
"Twenty-five years of continued funding is a testament to the consistently excellent science conducted by PNW Prostate Cancer SPORE researchers," said Dr. Peter Nelson, professor (Hematology and Oncology), who heads the PNW Prostate Cancer SPORE. "Our scientists have made practice-changing breakthroughs and widened the scope of treatment and screening options available to prostate cancer patients."

Registration is open for our annual Department of Medicine Workshop: "Surviving and Thriving During the Research Years<https://bit.ly/3S3jx3D>", a course covering skills necessary for academic success, such as grant & manuscript writing, mentorship, appointments & promotions, and breakout sessions on opportunities in industry or the public health & policy sector. The course is designed for fellows navigating their research path and is open to clinical and PhD fellows and early-stage faculty from all departments. There is no charge to attend this course.
