In memoriam: Michael Copass
[Michael Copass]Dr. Michael Copass, professor emeritus (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) passed away on July 26. He was 86. Copass started his career at UW in 1969 as a neurology resident, and went on to hold various prestigious positions, including director of emergency services at Harborview Medical Center from 1973 to 2008 and medical director of Airlift Northwest from 1982 to 2008.
In 1975, he became the director of the Harborview Medical Center's paramedic training program. In this role, he shaped the careers of countless paramedics and established one of the most rigorous and respected training programs in the nation. His relentless dedication and innovative approach expanded the program's scope to include not only cardiac care but also trauma, obstetrics, pediatric care, and more. He also served as the Seattle Fire Department Medical Director, further solidifying his influence in emergency medical services.
Dr. Copass' legacy will live on through the countless lives he saved, the paramedics he trained, and the community he served. His dedication to improving emergency medical care has left an enduring impact that will continue to benefit generations to come.

Washington State Academy of Sciences
[Drs. Thomas Lynch and Juliana McElrath]Congratulations to Drs. Thomas Lynch, professor (Hematology and Oncology) and Juliana McElrath, professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) who are among the new class of members elected to the Washington State Academy of Sciences<https://bit.ly/3SClJPF>.
Lynch was elected for being part of a research effort that found mutations in the cell-surface protein epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), which plays an important role in helping lung cancer cells survive. Today, drugs that target EGFR can dramatically change outcomes for lung cancer patients by slowing the progression of the cancer.
McElrath is recognized for her seminal contributions to developing validated laboratory methods for interrogating cellular and humoral immune responses to HIV, TB and COVID-19 vaccines, which has led to the analysis of more than 100 vaccine and monoclonal antibody trials for nearly three decades, including evidence of T-cell immune responses as a correlate of vaccine protection.

Integrated Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine Fellowship
[cid:image026.jpg at 01DAE4F5.79019C00]We are pleased to announce ABIM approval for the launch of an official Integrated Geriatric and Palliative fellowship. This two-year program leads to board certification in both specialties and allows for up to eight months of protected time for scholarship and development as a leader.
"At this time when healthcare for older adults and those with serious illness needs rapid improvement, this program is set to provide the training needed to have the greatest impact," said Dr. Kate Bennett, associate professor (Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine) and program director of the new fellowship, along with Dr. Lianne Hirano, clinical associate professor. Dr. Gina Kang, clinical assistant professor, will be the faculty lead for the track.
"We have a long track record of collaboration between the two fellowship programs (Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine), so are eager to take this to the next level to provide this fully integrated training. The combination of geriatrics and palliative medicine, leadership training, and academic skills will graduate trainees who have exponential impact on the lives of older adults in our health system, region, and nation."
Applications are currently being accepted for a July 2025 start. Please reach out to Dr. Bennett<mailto:bennett4 at uw.edu> with any questions.

BRCA1/2: Why men should be screened for the breast cancer gene
[Heather Cheng]They are genes commonly associated with breast cancer in women, but in fact men who carry certain mutations in their BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes are at higher risk of developing certain types of cancer themselves. These risks for men traditionally have been under-recognized, but newly developed national screening guidelines offer hope for identifying the cancer risk of BRCA mutations in men through genetic testing and tailored cancer screening, according to a recent article published in JAMA Oncology<https://bit.ly/46oktp8>. Dr. Heather Cheng, professor (Hematology and Oncology) led the study.

Acute kidney injury might diminish cognition
[Pavan Bhatraju]Patients who sustain an acute kidney injury during a hospital stay due to a heart or lung condition face the risk of reduced mental acuity - even years later. This finding emerged in a study<https://bit.ly/3M55Q0J> published this month in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
The UW Medicine-led study followed 1,538 patients for three years. Participants underwent cognitive tests at intervals of three, 12 and 36 months after their hospitalizations.
"For the last two or three decades, there has been a growing recognition and concern of the long-term physical and cognitive consequences after hospitalization," said lead author Dr. Pavan Bhatraju, associate professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine). "Caring for patients in the hospital, we have noticed some patients have declines in cognitive function after leaving the hospital and we were wondering why this happens."

Strategic plan quarterly update
[cid:image029.jpg at 01DAE4F5.79019C00]We continue to make significant strides in implementing our strategic plan. During this quarter, workgroups demonstrated exceptional collaboration and dedication to advancing our strategic priorities.
Key highlights include the following:
* Research: The launch of the DOM Research Dashboard<https://bit.ly/3XDgkeD> represents a significant advancement in research data visualization and analysis. This tool provides valuable insights into research trends and performance. Office Hours to discuss data queries is on Aug. 14, 12-1pm, via zoom<https://washington.zoom.us/j/7902500611?omn=95196802227>.
* DEI: The DEI workgroup hosted a successful Diversity Council Annual Retreat, focusing on critical topics such as identity safety, restorative justice, and community engagement. This event underscored the department's commitment to fostering a more inclusive environment.
* Professional Development: The Professional Development workgroup achieved a major milestone by awarding the first DOM staff scholarships<https://bit.ly/3x2DLCD>. With $10K dispersed to 7 awardees, this initiative supports employee growth and professional development for qualifying continued education costs including workshops, certifications, educational courses and materials. Applications are accepted twice annually in April and October.
* Well-Being: The Well-being workgroup secured approval to pilot a remote well-being coaching program across three divisions: Gastroenterology, General Internal Medicine, and Cardiology. This innovative initiative aims to enhance employee well-being and support work-life balance.
* Education: The Education workgroup is developing a proposal to recognize teaching efforts and to increase teaching awards within the department.

Events of interest
Quiet week: August 5-9
As we continue to rebuild resilience and focus on mental health, we would like to preserve department-wide quiet weeks throughout the year. During these weeks, we hope that individuals can limit non-essential meetings to recharge and reflect, as well as thoughtfully minimize emails. We realize that this will not be possible for everyone, but encourage all to take breaks when they are able.
Upcoming 2024 quiet weeks:
* November 25-29
* December 23-27
Weekly Calendar, August 5-9, 2024
