Excellence Award for ECHO
[cid:image005.png at 01D9F2F2.2F80ADF0]Dr. John Scott, professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) accepted the 2023 Excellence Award on behalf of the University of Washington during the MetaEcho Global Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The UW was honored for our pioneering work as the first Project ECHO outside New Mexico and collaborations in Africa.

Celebrating outstanding staff
The 2023 recipients and nominees for the inaugural Outstanding Staff Awards<https://medicine.uw.edu/about/awards/dom-awards/outstanding-staff> were recognized and celebrated at a ceremony on Monday. The Outstanding Staff Award recognizes and celebrates exceptional staff members who are dedicated to supporting our missions of teaching, healing, discovery, and diversity, and upholding core values.

Washington State Medical Association elected officials
[cid:image018.jpg at 01D9F2F2.2F80ADF0]Dr. Matthew Hollon, clinical professor, was elected to the Washington State Medical Association (WSMA) Executive Committee as Secretary-Treasurer, and Dr. John Scott, professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) was elected to the WSMA board of trustees. The WSMA is the largest physician professional association in Washington, representing physicians, residents, medical students, and physician assistants from nearly all specialties and practice settings throughout the state.

Cancer Moonshot
[cid:image020.jpg at 01D9F2F2.2F80ADF0]First lady Jill Biden visited Fred Hutch<https://bit.ly/3ZtlqJi> last Friday to learn about our efforts to battle cancer and spoke about the White House's Cancer Moonshot, a renewed, national commitment to finding a cure for the deadly disease.
The Bidens' Cancer Moonshot initiative aims to prevent more than 4 million cancer deaths by 2047, and was first launched during President Joe Biden's tenure as vice president.
Moderated by Dr. Nancy Davidson, faculty from the DOM at the listening session included Dr. Veena Shankaran, who talked about a Fred Hutch study assessing outcomes in patients connected to nurse navigators who help with financial difficulties and otherwise support patients, and Rachel Yung, who talked about breast cancer screening and prevention, patient navigation, survivorship and increasing equity.

MSTAR Best Research Mentor award
[cid:image022.jpg at 01D9F2F2.2F80ADF0]Dr. Namrata Singh, assistant professor (Rheumatology) has been selected to receive a 2023 UCLA MSTAR Best Research Mentor Award. MSTAR (Medical Student Training in Aging Research) is a combined program (UCLA, UCSF and UW) that provides medical students short-term research training in aging and geriatrics with successful mentors in the field, with the goal of encouraging medical students to consider careers as physician scientists in aging research.

Dr. Denis Baskin, research professor emeritus, will receive the 2023 George Gomori Award from the Histochemical Society for his outstanding contributions to histochemistry. This award honors George Gomori, a founder of the Histochemical Society, and pioneer of the field of histochemistry and cytochemistry.

The University of Washington's Nutrition Obesity Research Center is soliciting applications for Pilot and Feasibility Research ADVANCE Awards<https://bit.ly/4591gp7>,

DOM faculty who are working to grow as teachers in the clinic or hospital setting are invited to register for the Division of General Internal Medicine's Faculty Development Boot Camp: Back to the Bedside. Topics include balancing autonomy and supervision, teaching procedures, coaching on physical exam and presentations, addressing racism and bias, and maximizing bedside teaching efficiency.
