Awards
Creative Invention Award
[cid:image004.jpg at 01D9ED6C.BCE9A560]Dr. Mary (Nora) Disis, professor (Hematology and Oncology) is the 2024 recipient of the Creative Invention Award by the American Chemical Society (ACS). She is being recognized for her work in developing vaccines for the prevention and treatment of cancers.

Dr. Disis is also presenting “What if…vaccines could end cancer?” on Nov. 9, at 1pm. as part of a three-part series focused on groundbreaking UW research. She will discuss using the immune system to destroy cancer, and how vaccines can effectively kill it. Register here<https://bit.ly/3PriSa3>.


DEI news
Healthcare Equity Peer Trainers
In 2019, the Office of Healthcare Equity<https://equity.uwmedicine.org/> (OHCE) began providing antiracism training, with the goal of reaching every member of the UW Medicine community. To supplement and work alongside subject matter experts, in 2021, OHCE developed a “train-the-trainer” program to produce a group of skilled EDI peer trainers available to deliver training across our diverse system. Certified EDI peer trainers are indispensable members of OHCE’s training team, and include the following members from the Department of Medicine:

Dr. Addie McClintock, assistant professor (General Internal Medicine) is the new director of the Teaching Scholars Program. The CLIME Teaching Scholars Program is a 10 month professional development program for educators in the health professions who have a passion for teaching and a desire to become academic leaders.

[cid:image010.jpg at 01D9ED6C.BCE9A560]Dr. Somnath Mookherjee, professor (General Internal Medicine) is the new director of the Center for Learning and Innovation in Medicine Education (CLIME). The mission of CLIME is to create a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming community that works together to optimize teaching skills, foster educator career development, and support educational scholarship.

Research news
Expanding access to care for people with long COVID
[cid:image012.jpg at 01D9ED6C.BCE9A560]The UW Medicine Post COVID team was awarded one of 9 grants from the Agency from Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to improve access to care for underserved people with long COVID. This project is the culmination of several years of development of a multidisciplinary team to care for people with long COVID and a testament to the power of working together across specialties to harness collective expertise to tackle a challenging problem.

Jessica Bender, clinical assistant professor, Anita Chopra, clinical assistant professor, and Leo Morales, professor (General Internal Medicine), along with faculty from Rehab Medicine, Family Medicine and Neurology. Improving the quality of care for patients with COPD

David Au, professor, and Lucas Donovan, associate professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) have been awarded a $680,568 supplemental contract from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute to study the patient and caregiver cost burdens of interventions to improve care quality for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

This research will be embedded in the investigators’ $9.5 million pragmatic trial comparing a pharmacist vs. pulmonologist-led strategy to proactively improve COPD care quality across five VA sites. Learn more on our news site<https://bit.ly/46fF8dF>.

Physiological changes underlying the weight loss plateau in humans

Ellen Schur, professor (General Internal Medicine), Marian Neuhouser (Epidemiology), and Jenny Tong, associate professor (Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition) have received $3M over 4 years from the NIDDK for their project “Physiological changes underlying the weight loss plateau in humans” to study involuntary weight-loss plateaus in study participants who are undergoing behavioral weight loss interventions. Dr. Sayuli Bhide, R3, received funding from the Rheumatology Research Foundation Resident Research Preceptorship to study “Sex differences in frailty and mortality in Veterans with Rheumatoid Arthritis.” She will be working on this proposal with Drs. Katie Wysham (Rheumatology) and Joshua Baker (UPenn).

Drs. Heidi Crane, professor, Rob Fredericksen, research assistant professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) and Andrew Hahn, clinical assistant professor (General Internal Medicine) were awarded a new 5-year NIDA-funded RO1 “Understanding Health Inequities at the Intersection of the HIV and substance use epidemics across racial/ethnic and other underserved populations.” UW co-investigators include Mari Kitahata, Chris Delaney, Geetanjali Chander, William Lober, Lydia Drumright, Bridget Whitney, and Robin Nance. Faculty bootcamp: Back to the bedside
DOM faculty who are working to grow as teachers in the clinic or hospital setting are invited to register for the Division of General Internal Medicine’s Faculty Development Boot Camp: Back to the Bedside. Topics include balancing autonomy and supervision, teaching procedures, coaching on physical exam and presentations, addressing racism and bias, and maximizing bedside teaching efficiency.
