He had an outstanding national and international reputation as a scholar. His investigative work focused on end-of-life and palliative care with the goal of improving the care for people with terminal conditions by improving the patient clinician communication about end-of-life care and the integration of palliative care in the ICU setting. In 2012, he founded and directed the Cambia Palliative Care Center of Excellence.

Education news
Soldotna IM Residency Program Accredited
[image014.jpg]At its January meeting, the ACGME gave Initial Accreditation to a new Internal Medicine residency program based in the Department of Medicine.

Known as the University of Washington-Alaska Internal Medicine Rural Residency Program (UW AK IM RRP), the program’s mission is to provide an intensive Alaska-based, rural primary care-focused training experience in internal medicine. This is the very first accredited rural residency training program in Internal Medicine in the country.

Dr. Ken Steinberg, IM residency program director, will serve as the initial program director but much credit goes to two other Department of Medicine faculty members: Dr. Gail Pokorney, clinical assistant professor, who will be the site director in Soldotna, and Dr. Megan Roosen-Runge, clinical instructor, who will be core faculty in Soldotna, for their hard work and leadership in developing this program.

“To be the first accredited IM rural residency in the country for this type of innovative training program is truly an accomplishment. I am so grateful for the support from the Department, UW Medicine, Peninsula Internal Medicine in Soldotna, and to everyone who worked on this project with us, especially Gail and Megan,” said Ken Steinberg.

Research news
[image018.jpg]Stigma, lack of support limit HIV testing in Côte d’Ivoire
To improve HIV testing rates in the West African country of Côte d’Ivoire, community health workers need more training and support, researchers from the UW and the Institute de Recherche et Actions en Afrique, Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire report in a new study.

In this study, the team of researchers sought to determine, from the perspective of healthcare providers in Cote d’Ivoire, major challenges to identifying people infected, given that less than 40 percent of people with HIV infection knew they were infected. “We need to identify people who are infected if we are going to treat them, but identification can be the hardest of the three 95 percent goals to achieve,” said Dr. Nancy Mugisha, fellow (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) and lead author of the paper published in PLOS ONE<https://bit.ly/40JTRM7>.
