75th anniversary swag distribution

Call for applications: DOM Diversity Academic Development Scholar Award
This award is to assist highly qualified and meritorious trainees at the rank of senior fellow/acting instructor and/or acting assistant professor in their transition to the roles of clinician-scholar, physician-scientist, research-scientist, and principal investigator (PI) as newly appointed assistant professors. The award provides salary support for 1-2 years at $50,000 per year. Application deadline: April 1, 2023. For more information, please visit our website<https://bit.ly/3AbPH2J>.

American Society for Clinical Investigation
[cid:image005.jpg at 01D937E7.5A60D9D0]Congratulations to Dr. Jose Garcia, professor (Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine) who has been elected to membership in the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI).

Election to the ASCI is a milestone in the physician-scientist career path. The society is an honor society of physician-scientists, who translate findings in the laboratory to the advancement of clinical practice.

Staff news
Farewell to Michelle Lynch
[cid:image007.jpg at 01D937E7.5A60D9D0]Michelle Lynch has accepted the position of Vice Chair for Finance and Administration in the UW Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, effective March 1. Michelle has been the administrator in the Division of General Internal Medicine since July 2011. Before that she worked at the UW for 11 years in the Office of Planning and Budgeting and the Office of Finance and Facilities.

"While bittersweet for GIM, Michelle is so deserving of this promotion which will allow her to continue to grow and challenge herself in new and exciting ways," said Division Head Dr. Geetanjali Chander. "I personally have appreciated her commitment to seeing the Division through John Amory's tenure as interim Division Head and my first 10 months in this role."

We wish her all the best in her future endeavors. More information will follow regarding a celebration for Michelle in February and the search for her successor.

[cid:image009.jpg at 01D937E7.5A60D9D0]Dr. Graham Nichol, professor (General Internal Medicine) has been awarded a multi-year research contract by Abiomed Inc. to ensure timely and efficient completion of the RECOVER IV trial under exception from informed consent (EFIC) for emergency research. The Early Impella(r) Support in Patients with ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction Complicated by Cardiogenic Shock trial is commonly referred to as the RECOVER IV Trial. This trial will enroll eligible patients with acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction and cardiogenic shock in 50 sites in the United States and Europe. It will be implemented with an Investigational Device Exemption from the Food and Drug Administration.

We are currently accepting nominations for the Chair of Medicine Scholar Awards and the Fialkow Scholar Awards. Nomination deadline for both awards: April 1, 2023.


* The Chair of Medicine Scholar Award<https://bit.ly/3GIkuq1> is intended to provide support (primarily PI salary support) for promising senior fellow/acting instructors to be appointed as physician-scientists at the rank of assistant professor.


* The Fialkow Scholar Award<https://bit.ly/3FCdzNW> is intended to recognize and support a junior faculty member (assistant or research assistant professor), with a primary appointment in the Department of Medicine, who shows outstanding promise as a scholar.

Spotlight: Northwest Lipid Research Clinic
The NW Lipid Research Clinic was established in the early 1970s with a dual goal of optimizing clinical treatment of complex lipid disorders and furthering our understanding of the relationship between cardiovascular disease and lipids and the impact of lipid lowering therapies on health. Over the last 50 years, it has been at the forefront of advances in diagnosis and clinical management of lipid disorders with an overall emphasis on disease prevention.

Today, the NW Lipid Research Clinic resides at South Lake Union as part of the multidisciplinary care offered at the UW Medicine Diabetes Institute where internationally known researchers and clinicians continue these traditions of excellence.

February is American Heart Month, dedicated to raising awareness about heart health and urging us all to take steps to prevent heart disease. Join The Whole U and UW Medicine Heart Institute on Tuesday, Feb. 7 for a special zoom session discussing heart health. You'll hear from cardiologists Dr. Kevin O'Brien and Dr. Ruchi Kapoor as they address the unique warning signs of heart disease and how we can all protect our hearts. Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Survey
UW Medicine has launched an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Survey<https://depts.washington.edu/hcequity/edisurvey/> to identify baseline measures of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion across UW Medicine and provide actionable data to help prioritize areas for work at the entity and departmental levels. All UW Medicine faculty, staff, and trainees are invited and encouraged to participate in the survey which will take about 10-15 minutes to complete. The survey will be open from Jan. 17 - Feb. 28, 2023. Please participate in this survey to help make us a more equitable and anti-racist institution.

Seattle Sounders March 18
The Department of Medicine is proud to sponsor a Seattle Sounders match on Saturday, March 18, at noon at Lumen Field in downtown Seattle. We are reserving a block of seats for the event, and a link to buy discounted tickets will become available within the coming weeks where you will be able to purchase tickets for yourself and friends and family on a first come, first served basis. Food vouchers will be provided to each participating employee.

Eli Estey symposium on the pathogenesis and therapy of AML
A scientific symposium honoring Dr. Eli Estey's many contributions to leukemia research and care will be held at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center on May 19, 2023 from 9am to 5:30pm with state-of-the-art talks by esteemed AML colleagues.
