Awards
J. Randall Curtis receives Assembly on Critical Care Lifetime Achievement Award and Hastings Center Cunniff-Dixon Physician Award
[cid:image029.jpg at 01D8616A.7E50ECD0]The Assembly on Critical Care Lifetime Achievement Award is given in appreciation of a career devoted to research, teaching of the science, and practice of critical care medicine, as well as outstanding service to the Assembly on Critical Care.

The Hastings Center Cunniff-Dixon Physician Award honors physicians for their outstanding contributions in medical practice, teaching, research, and community. This award is one of the top honors for physicians practicing palliative care in the United States and Dr. Curtis joins a very special community of 55 physicians chosen over the last 12 years who represent early, mid and senior career leaders in the field of palliative care.

Led by guest moderators, the Gender Equity Lunch Series<https://medicine.uw.edu/diversity/gender-equity/lunch> focuses on topics related to gender equity and leadership development. This series is open to all members of all genders in the Department of Medicine.

Faculty news
Welcome Geetanjali Chander
Dr. Geetanjali Chander started this week as our new head of the Division of General Internal Medicine. [image026.jpg at 01D7F35D] Chander comes to the UW from Johns Hopkins, where she was a professor in the School of Medicine, with a joint appointment in epidemiology in the Bloomberg School of Public Health. For over ten years she led the General Internal Medicine Fellowship program and has been recognized for her mentoring with a Scholarly Concentrations Excellence in Mentoring Award and Brancati Mentoring Award from Johns Hopkins and a Mid-Career Research Mentorship Award from the National Society for General Internal Medicine. Her research is focused on the effects of substance abuse and mental health disorders on HIV disease outcomes.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Chander,” said Department Chair Dr. Barbara Jung, “and look forward to the insight and leadership she will bring to the division and the department.”

Thank you to Dr. Stephanie Page and the entire search committee for their efforts, and Dr. John Amory for his ongoing dedication and leadership as interim division head.

[Image]Dr. Christopher Knight, associate professor (General Internal Medicine) is the new Governor of the Washington Chapter of the American College of Physicians. The Washington Chapter of ACP is comprised of approximately 2,700 members promoting professionalism and education in internal medicine. ACP is a national organization of internists, the largest medical-specialty organization, and second-largest physician group in the United States.

Success for Underrepresented Faculty (SURF) Program

Applications are now open for the Success for Underrepresented Faculty (SURF) Program<https://bit.ly/3kNQMXr> for URM Assistant Professor (Regular Promotion Pathway) Basic Scientists, Clinician-Scientists, and Clinician Educator/Scholars. Apply<https://bit.ly/3kP8pGw> by Friday May 27th.

Goal: Establish a strong foundation for career success including: 

* Establish well-defined career mission and goals 
* Learn new skills to initiate and optimize relationships with mentors and leaders 
* Develop productivity strategies applicable to academic medicine 

* Acquire decision-making and negotiating skills in the setting of challenging power dynamics 
* Create a 3-year roadmap for success 

Commitment: 
This is a small-group 12-month program with an intentional commitment of time, energy, and effort. On average this is a 2-hr per week commitment.  
Time: Monthly group meetings for 75 minutes and monthly (as needed) 1:1 60-minute coaching sessions.  
Energy: Active engagement, peer co-learning, and no multi-tasking. 
Effort: Willing to do the work until it works for you!


Research news
[cid:image033.jpg at 01D8616A.7E50ECD0]Dr. William Grady, professor (Gastroenterology) has received a 2022 Kuni Foundation Imagination Grant. Intended to fulfill an unmet need or to advance important work in the pursuit of impactful and innovative cancer research, the Imagination Grant serves as a catalyst for strengthening or expanding the cancer research capabilities of an institution in service to its mission. With this award Dr. Grady and team will continue to work to identify novel molecular tests for identifying individuals at high risk for liver cancer. His work with Dr. Ioannou includes applying these findings to Alaska Native and American Indian populations.

[cid:image034.jpg at 01D8616A.7E50ECD0]Dr. Matt Altman, associate professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) is PI of a recently awarded NIAID U19 to study immune responses to acute viral respiratory infections in vulnerable populations. This study is 5-year $11.4 million dollar award funded as part of the Human Immunophenotyping Consortium. Dr. Kim Dill-McFarland, Ph.D. Senior Bioinformatician, will lead the Data Management Core. His Co-PI is Dr. Carmen Mikacenic, M.D., Associate Member at Benaroya Research Institute and volunteer clinical associate professor of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep Medicine at the University of Washington.

Levy, professor (School of Social Work), adjunct professor (Gastroenterology) and Tonya Palermo, professor (SOM: Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine) have been awarded 3.8 million dollars from the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development for a five year RO1 entitled "Early intervention for children at risk for idiopathic abdominal pain. " The study will evaluate the benefits of early preventive psychosocial interventions for children who are at risk for severe abdominal pain. A major goal of the study is to demonstrate a prevention model for a range of pediatric health problems where parental responses are influencing factors.

Eoin West, professor (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) and Shelton Wright (Pediatric Critical Care) were awarded $15,000 by the UW Office Global Affairs for the 2022 Global Innovation Fund. Their study, “Urinary biomarkers as determinants of pneumonia outcome in Southeast Asia” enhances bi-directional adult- and pediatric-focused research/training partnerships with colleagues at Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand.

Funding opportunities for early career clinical and translational investigators
The ITHS KL2 Career Development Program provides funding, mentoring, and training to prepare early career investigators in the Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho (WWAMI) region for independent research careers.

Early career faculty and postdoctoral investigators may be eligible to apply for unique career development funding linked to the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) grant awarded to ITHS by NIH. The ITHS KL2 Career Development Program provides mentorship and structured professional development for early career investigators in the WWAMI region. In addition to our standard cohort, three NIH programs seek to support dedicated KL2 scholar appointments in the following research areas:
• Conditions co-occurring with Down syndrome across the lifespan
• Dental, oral, and craniofacial projects
• Natural products or mind-body approaches (must hold doctoral, clinical complementary and integrative health degree)
