Hopefully you have enjoyed a Summer of sailing, and are also as excited as I am for Fall, arguably the best season for sailing because of the great wind and warm water temperatures! I?m writing to brief you on some exciting involvement opportunities coming up in the near future. September will be our busiest month of the year, with major recruitment events and Fall Snooze ?n Cruise stacking our programing. To that end, we? the leadership of the club? need your help to get the year started! Please see below for volunteer and social opportunities for our upcoming season. Renew Your WYC Membership We have opened our Fall Quarter Membership Form for those of you who would like to renew your membership for the new season! Friendly reminder that a valid Rec Membership is required to participate in WYC activities alongside a current WYC membership. We are temporarily suspending the yearlong membership option as we anticipate minimal sailing from the WAC during construction time in Winter. We appreciate your involvement in the club as the WYC prepares for a new era! Leadership are working on future dinghy storage and keelboat moorage arrangements for a time Post?Dock Renovations. We are hopeful about the situation and have faith in the resilience of the club. Dawg Daze Recruitment Events Please sign up to help us put up our Fall recruitment events! We are hosting two Dawg Daze events that new and prospective members could look forward to: - Our Dawg Daze Open House event will be held Sunday 9/22 from 1?7pm at the WAC. This is our biggest event where 200?300 students board club keelboats for 30-minute cruises on Union Bay and Lake Washington. We need all hands on deck for this event: sign wavers, waiver signing volunteers, life jacket enforcers, skippers, qualified crew? you name it! - Our Dawg Daze Information Session will be Thursday 9/26 6?7pm in Sieg 420. Help us make a good impression and answer questions for new and prospective WYC members! Additionally, we will be boothing at the RSO Fair (date TBA in Red Square) and Recreation Fair (concurrent to 9/22 Open House at the IMA) so please also sign up for tabling to help us promote the WYC to future sailors! Please put your name down on this Volunteer Sign-ups spreadsheet so we know you?re coming! Use the tabs below to navigate through the events. Ready To Teach? The Fall 2024 Instructor & Volunteer Form is now open! If you would like to help out with educational events or teach classes this Fall, please fill out this form. Instructors are exempt from membership dues during the quarter they?re scheduled to teach! Those without the necessary ratings are still encouraged to apply, as this will help us assess the demand for individual classes. Feel free to DM Vice Commodore Yoochan (@yoochanan) on Discord with any questions! Boat Move Work Parties (BMWPs) We?re in the midst of Football Season, which means Boat Moves! What are Boat Moves? The arrival of sailgating boats for Husky Harbor means a few things for us: for Friday evenings, we will need to tie up, tow, and anchor all our dinghies in the Bay, and we will also need to move our keelboats to the canoe/kayak-launching U-dock once WAC rentals close. Then for Sunday mornings, we will need to move our boats back to their original locations before kayak rentals start (while rentals are ongoing). This is a hands-on, social activity that gets to be a lot of fun! Learn to handle boats like big tetris pieces. Please also note that participation in work parties is mandatory for club members and helps club leadership immensely in keeping things running. Hint: We note attendance as service to the club, which doesn?t hurt in getting you more sailing opportunities! The dates of this Quarter?s game days, which are usually Saturday, are: - 8/31 - 9/7 - 9/21 - 10/5 - 11/2 - 11/15 (a Friday game, so our boats must be moved on the Thursday prior.) There are boat moves for the above dates on the day before and the day after! You can let us know you?re coming by using the Boat Moves page in the Volunteer Sign-ups spreadsheet ! New Committee Announcement: #Creative_Team If you?d like to help up make flyers, posters, stickers, social media posts, merch designs etc. please join the #creative_team channel on Discord and introduce yourself/your interests! Olivia?s Dawg Daze Creative document in the pinned messages of the channel include the media we would appreciate help with. Fall Snooze ?n Cruise Join us for our Saturday?Sunday sailing/camping trip to Blake Island on 9/28?29! Reach out to Olivia if you are interested in helping us plan our food and drinks options, if you have ideas about events and games for the group, or if you?re able to do photography/videography for the trip, etc.! If you have leads on any boats who could support the transport of members to and from the island, we?d love to hear from you. We are also looking to borrow a 9.9 hp outboard for the weekend if anyone has one available to lend. Snooze ?n Cruise Work Party will be on Friday 9/27. Please come help us get our boats in shape and packed for the weekender! Windsurfing Policies Proposals Dan Oliver of the Windsurfing Program has brought forth the following proposals for changes to windsurfing that will be discussed and voted on at the next general meeting: - WYC Bylaws with proposed amendments (proposed changes are highlighted). - Proposed Windsurf policy document (most of the document is new language, language that is originally from WYC policies is highlighted): - Windsurf badges descriptions. Badges are mentioned in the new policies, article 1 section c, and there is an additional doc with all the requirements for each specific badge. You may review the above documents and provide feedback through your google account as suggestions/comments on the document. There is an additional comments sheet for your broader thoughts. Join WYC Leadership We?re always in need of help in administering the club! We are looking for active club members who have some experience with sailing in the club and attending club events. Familiarity and comfort with using Discord is a major plus, as all our Executive Council communications currently take place on the platform. If you have any interest in leadership, please DM Co-Commodore Renee Chien on Discord to let me know. We are flexible with potentially creating positions for your particular strengths. Updates To Our Discord New Roles are available for selection! There?s a #members_profiles channel for introductions and bios! A #carpool channel to get you places! Emojis for channels to make the Server more readable! Please follow us along on Discord for the most timely updates on the activity of the club. Of note, most Ithaka lessons get planned and announced on Discord first. We also gauge interest for supervised sailing and lessons like catamaran classes in the relevant channels on the platform. Miscellaneous Items - Club leadership hope to host General Meetings once a month this upcoming Fall Quarter to keep everyone in the loop about the direction of the club. - Follow our Instagram and share our posts as they go live in the coming month! - Please continue your letter writing campaign to UW Administration to advocate for the WYC. - As always, reach out with your questions in the #questions_and_support channel on our Discord Server. Unless specified otherwise, please defer to the channel for help (instead of DMing individual officers) as we can respond quicker with more eyes on the questions and our individual inboxes can get quite overrun. Thanks for being a part of our community and see you on the water soon! *Renee Chien and Bhanu Sharma* Co-Commodores of the WYC Washington Yacht Club, the student sailing club at UW commodore@washigntonyachtclub.org Join Our Discord Community | Follow Our Instagram www.washingtonyachtclub.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
