We are offering both quarterly and annual memberships at their previous rates. UW Students may sign up for new memberships and renew existing memberships. Please spread the word to students who may be interested in joining the club. For Faculty, Staff, and Alumni, club policy has been to require those whose memberships have lapsed to join a waitlist for renewal and to be charged our $45 Initiation Fee. However, because we were only able to resume our sailing activities part-way through this quarter, and in consideration of the challenges over the past couple years, for Spring quarter we will be accepting membership renewals from those with membership expiration dates of Winter 2020 or later and waiving the Initiation Fee. The Spring membership sign-up form is available at: https://forms.gle/eVTN7SY1znmH7rX98 We currently have the opportunity to sail on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays as part of planned events, and we can explore other possibilities as well. What we need most right now are volunteers to help teach lessons and input about what types of sailing activities members would like to participate in. Please reach out with any ideas for events that you would like to see us hold. Instructors are exempt from paying membership dues during quarters in which they teach. If you are interested in teaching lessons this quarter, please fill out the Instructor Sign-Up Form: https://bit.ly/3vMoa7P If you are interested in taking lessons or other opportunities to learn as a member of the club, please fill out the Lessons Interest Form: https://bit.ly/3pNIsKh We are looking into organizing a sailboarding/windsurfing trip to Hood River, Oregon. If you are interested, please fill out this form: https://bit.ly/3sVL5M9 For all upcoming events, keep an eye out on our Lessons & Events page: http://www.washingtonyachtclub.org/lessons Lastly, we just wanted to remind everybody that the AmazonSmile program is a great way to support the club at no additional cost to you. Tom and Evan contributed enormously to the organization and to our community through decades of close involvement, and their warm presence will be sincerely missed. Tom joined the WYC in 2000, and many of you will know him from being the organizer of our Snooze n Cruise events since 2012. While Tom originally gravitated towards sailing dinghies, often choosing to skipper the club?s 470 with a club member hiked out on the trapeze, in recent years his interest in sailing keelboats grew, and you would often find Tom taking club members and prospective club members out on Talaria III. Evan was similarly a constant presence at the waterfront, serving as a WYC Chief for many years. Many of you would recognize Evan as the skipper of Frenesi for most of our recent Snooze n Cruise events, similarly mentoring new student sailors and putting his time, experience, and calm demeanor into creating positive experiences for those around him. Evan was fond of sailing Lasers, and he was a frequent Duck Dodge participant. Tom and Evan both had strong conviction about what they wanted out of life, and they weren?t afraid to go after it. They were close friends for many years and particularly enjoyed scuba diving together, making trips to Isla Mujeres almost every year. As expressed by a fellow club member, some sort of relief might be felt in knowing that the two of them were together last in their favorite spot in the world, surrounded by the serenity of the vast open ocean and the gentle dazzling array of fish that they loved seeing. The club is working on several ways to memorialize and celebrate the lives of Tom and Evan, and we will keep the club membership informed about such efforts. Tom?s partner has asked for memories and photos of Tom to be shared at https://www.tomschaefermemorial.com/. Please also share any photos that you have of Tom and Evan to this Google Drive folder . You may also wish to join the WYC Chat mailing list and share your memories there. We are unified in our sadness over the loss of these wonderful members of our community, and our thoughts are with all of Tom and Evan?s friends and family, and the many others whose lives they have touched. We should be able to get a couple keelboats out each day and start enjoying some of that Seattle Spring weather. We would like everyone to arrive at the start of the event, however, don't worry if you would like to leave early. We will also be using this time to work on the blue whaler so we can hopefully start dinghy sailing in the very near future. Sign up at http://www.washingtonyachtclub.org/lessons (under specialty) *as soon as possible*, so I can get an event roster submitted. If you do not see the link, I may have had to close the registrations early. But fear not, these keelboat events should be happening every weekend and I'll start opening up registrations over the weekend. Feel free to add our website calendar (here ) to keep up to date with our coming programming. These events are open to all current members (Renew here: http://www.washingtonyachtclub.org/join-us). For *new members,* keelboat sailing is a great way to get introduced to our fleet and so long as we have a few rated members attending we can take a good number of people out. A reminder for those on the Exec List that we will also be having a work party to restore the white whaler this weekend at Roy's fabulous shop. Contact Angie (angiecuapal@gmail.com) for more details.
