The King County Wastewater Treatment Division is seeking an enthusiastic,
positive-thinking, and collaborative team member to conduct field
monitoring and sampling activities for our Industrial Waste program. The
Compliance Specialist II position is a fantastic opportunity to work for a
progressive utility focused on providing essential wastewater services to
the public in an equitable and inclusive environment. This role performs
required sampling and monitoring in the field and conducts surveillance
monitoring and key maintenance hole activities. Openings for Compliance
Specialist II positions are infrequent, and experience working in this role
is a good career path position which can eventually lead to a promotion and
various growth opportunities such as Compliance Specialist III, Compliance
Investigator role, other positions within the Environmental and Community
Service Section or jobs at the King County Environmental Lab.

About the Role:
This position primarily performs field activities associated with
monitoring and sampling industrial users across WTD’s sewer service area.
Other aspects of the position consist of calibrating and maintaining
sampling equipment, ordering equipment and supplies, and creating standard
operating procedures for sampling events. Our ideal candidate will have a
passion for conducting sampling efforts independently at various industrial
facilities and has the skills and abilities to work collaboratively as a
sampling team member. Our candidate must be able to work in challenging
settings and treat others with respect and professionalism at all times.

This position performs work remotely and onsite.

serves the important role of protecting our workers and sewer and treatment
infrastructure from industrial wastewater discharges. By ensuring that
industrial wastes are properly treated before being conveyed to the
sanitary sewer system, KCIW helps the treatment plants discharge clean
water to Puget Sound.

Job Duties

What You Will Be Doing:

- Plan and execute industrial waste (IW) sampling and other field
monitoring activities and measurements in accordance with federal, state,
and local regulations. Document and log all activities associated with
sampling.
- Use plans and documents related to IW discharges and conveyance
facilities to locate and select sample sites.
- Evaluate and monitor industrial discharges and analytical data.
Recognize violations and report them to industry representatives and
Industrial Waste Compliance Investigators. Use computers, MS Office Suite
and KCIW’s Pretreatment Information Management System Database.
- Procure sampling equipment and associated supplies. Maintain equipment
purchase, maintenance and calibration logs and records.
- Evaluate, operate, maintain, calibrate, and modify complex sampling
and analytical equipment. Respond to complaint calls about spills into the
sanitary sewer system.
- Provide excellent customer service and interact industrial waste
customers at field locations in the King County service area and
collaborate with peers in the KCIW unit, and staff at the environmental lab.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Qualifications You Bring:

- At least 2 years of experience conducting field sampling and
monitoring work associated with industrial waste pretreatment programs or a
related environmental field.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of safety hazards associated with environmental
sampling.
- Demonstrated skill in using computers and software programs such as
databases, word processing and spreadsheets.
- Skill in operating, calibrating, maintaining, and troubleshooting
sampling equipment.
- Skill in dealing effectively with groups or individuals in difficult
circumstances.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining working relationships with
co-workers and customers.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:

- Field Work, On-site and Remote Work Details: Employees in this role
will primarily conduct sampling and monitoring at industrial facilities
throughout the WTD service area with field work reporting requirements
typically 4-5 days per week. Sampling equipment and County-vehicle will be
housed at the King County Environmental Lab (KCEL) and a dedicated
workstation will be provided there. Remote work from a home location is
available when not conducting field work or other work at KCEL. The
frequency of field and onsite work is determined by business needs and may
be adjusted accordingly. Onsite field work reporting locations may be at
various King County worksites including the collaboration space at King
Street Center (201 S. Jackson St, Seattle, WA 98104). This work arrangement

- Remote Work Location Requirement: Employees must reside in Washington
State and be within a reasonable distance to King County worksites to meet
onsite reporting requirements.
- Work Schedule: Monday through Friday with a flexible schedule. This
full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is covered under
the provisions of the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) and is overtime
eligible.
- Union Representation: This position is represented by Local 1652R.
- Physical Requirement: Ability to remove and replace utility access
covers and lift up to 50 pounds of field equipment.
