Hi Everyone,

Please find below the details for the upcoming Works in Progress Presentation (Friday, Feb 6th, 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM, Allen Auditorium, Allen Library):

Title: Intermedial Promotion and the Monetization of Film History in Disney and Cirque Du Soleil
[cid:02150c00-d728-4c2c-b0bf-1336650838e0]

Abstract: In 2021, Disney Studios commissioned Cirque Du Soleil’s Drawn to Life, a hybrid dramatization of cel animation's production process, that combines modern dance and circus with puppeteering and animation. I situate the show within a longer studio history, in which Disney has tightly controlled scholarly access to the studio's own archival records, while also simultaneously monetizing that history and selling it back to its audiences, fans, and scholars through three major innovative avenues: fan expos, museum exhibitions, and new product lines and theatrical performances, which self-reflexively commodify the studio's own industrial production processes and material history. These and other promotional strategies are new additions to the traditional marketing and licensing of creative content in which Disney has been an industry leader since the 1930s. Through an examination of the studio's creative techniques in copyrighting, controlling, and reifying the representation and circulation of its own intellectual property and historiography, I argue that Drawn to Life is an exemplary case study in new trends in animation and film and media history.

Bio: Kirsten Moana Thompson is Professor of Film and Media and former Chair of the Film and Media Dept at Seattle University, and previous Chair of the film departments at Victoria and Wayne State Universities. She teaches and writes on animation, Pasifika (Pacific) and color studies and in the material histories of color and animation. She is the author, most recently, of Animation and Advertising (co-ed. M. Cook, Palgrave, 2019); and is currently working on a new book, Animated America: Intermedial Promotion, from Times Square to Walt Disney

Please feel free to share this with anyone who may be interested. Thank you. A reminder will be sent as the event approaches, and I hope to see you there!

Cheers,
Mavis Siu
