Greetings community!
The times call for community gathering and solidarity in multidirectional ways.
A group of Seattle-based artists, cultural workers, organizers, and friends are coming together, to raise awareness about the current recovery needs in Jamaica in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa which devastated Western parts of the island last November. Together we’ll learn about how to rebuild sustainably in a region facing economic + geopolitical strain, while threatened by more frequent and powerful storms due to climate change.
RiZe Up is no ordinary fundraiser - it’s a festive night of connection and good feelz. We’ll have African, Caribbean, and Soul food, an art auction exhibition featuring established and emerging artists from Seattle and the diaspora, a film screening and talkback, a vendor market, a mixer networking space with open bar, and a DJ dance after-party!
Join us for an evening of art, film, food, music, and just hanging out, keeping it real, and having fun.
All tickets + donations are tax-deductible.
Proceeds benefit relief organizers Humanity Ova Vanity, founded by activist/artist Donisha Prendergast, and Don-Roy Graham, founder of SuchnSuch Homestead.

ABOUT THE FILM
LIFE + DEBT , 2001, 87 minutes
A film by Stephanie Black
Black Cinema Collective is honored to present the first of many 25-year Anniversary screenings of the award-winning film, LIFE & DEBT (2001). In 2026 more of us are grappling with and learning about the how global capitalist mechanisms continue to cripple economies and the wholistic health of marginalized peoples throughout the world.
Known as a tropical destiny of sea, sand, and sun - Jamaica is also a prime example of the complexities of economic globalization. Using conventional and unconventional documentary techniques, this searing film dissects the "mechanism of debt" by addressing the impact of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank and current globalization policies on trade on developing regions. With voice-over narration written by Jamaica Kincaid and performed by Belinda Becker, LIFE & DEBT is an unapologetic look at the "new world order" and the reality of globalization we live with today.
Narration written by Jamaica Kincaid, based on A Small Place Cinematography: Malik Sayeed, Kyle Kibbe, Richard Lannaman & Alex Nepomniaschy
Editor: John Mullen
Associate Producer: Sarah Manley
Original Music: Mutabaruka
Kincaid Text read by Belinda Becker
