Film plays a vital role in the formation of opinions, positive and negative stereotypes, and cultural perceptions. In the United States, cinema has been used to influence countries towards an Americanized standard of living. Recent academia has seen a growing interest in how film has been utilized in the United States, China, India and more. The conversation will cover various areas of global cinema that showcase it as a vehicle for soft power.

Dr. Ross Melnick (Moderator) is professor of film and media studies at University of California, Santa Barbara. He was named a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow (2015) and an Academy Film Scholar (2017) for his forthcoming book, Hollywood's Embassies: How Movie Theaters Projected American Power Around the World (Columbia University Press, 2022). He is also the author of American Showman: Samuel 'Roxy' Rothafel and the Birth of the Entertainment Industry (Columbia University Press, 2012), co-editor of Rediscovering U.S. Newsfilm: Cinema, Television, and the Archive (AFI/Routledge, 2018), and co-founder of the Cinema Treasures website.

Dr. Hye Seung Chung is a professor of film and media studies at Colorado State University. She is the author of Hollywood Asian: Philip Ahn and the Politics of Cross-Ethnic Performance (Temple University Press, 2006), Kim Ki-duk (University of Illinois Press, 2012), and Hollywood Diplomacy: Film Regulation, Foreign Relations, and East Asian Representations (Rutgers University Press, 2020). She is also the co-author of Movie Migrations: Transnational Genre Flows and South Korean Cinema (Rutgers University Press, 2015) and Movie Minorities: Transnational Rights Advocacy and South Korean Cinema (Rutgers University Press, 2021).

Dr. Nitin Govil is an associate professor of cinema and media studies at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. His research focuses on comparative cultural politics, with an emphasis on transnational media industries. He is the author of Orienting Hollywood: A Century of Film Culture between Los Angeles and Bombay (New York University Press, 2015), which examines the long history of connections between Hollywood and Bombay cinema. He is also the co-author of Global Hollywood (British Film Institute, 2001) and Global Hollywood 2 (British Film Institute, 2005).

Dr. Laura Isabel Serna is an associate professor of history and cinema and media studies at the University of Southern California. She is the author of Making Cinelandia: American Films and Mexican Film Culture before the Golden Age (Duke University Press, 2014). Her current research focuses on the transnational dimensions of the Mexican film industry during the Golden Age.
