The book A Bird-Finding Guide to Costa Rica by Barrett Lawson has excellent
descriptions of birding sites throughout the country. It's a good way to
become familiar with what birds are found where, and has good descriptions
of individual birding sites.

I think the book is worthwhile to have even if you plan to hire a guide.
You can get an idea of what areas appeal to you.

The book was published in 2009 so some of the information is bound to be
dated. Nonetheless, I think it's a very useful book to have.
