[Tweeters] Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) Eagles Pride Golf Course (GC) monthly bird walk - 9-15-2022

Including a quartet of birders from the Vancouver Audubon Society, a dozen of us traversed the JBLM Eagles Pride GC birding route under very pleasant conditions (55degF-68degF). Too bad it was so quiet! We did, however, have a nice walk with some interesting sights:
- BELTED KINGFISHER flying over the area near the driving range. This is a seldom-seen species at Eagles Pride GC.
- PIED-BILLED GREBE at the 9th hole pond. Never have had this species at this spot.
- PIED-BILLED GREBE adult and three LOUD juveniles at Hodge Lake. The offspring are likely from the nest we spotted there last month.
- WOOD DUCKS aplenty: 31 altogether, split between the 9th hole pond and Hodge Lake. For some reason, the very small 9th hole pond has had a lot of Wood Ducks in the Fall over the past several years.
- CALIFORNIA SCRUB-JAYS: The seven we spotted were the most recorded on any one outing.
- WESTERN TANAGER was a nice surprise.
- VIOLET-GREEN and BARN SWALLOWS, although two of each, were also a nice sighting.

Mammals included black-tailed deer, Townsend's chipmunk, and Douglas squirrel.

The JBLM Eagles Pride GC birders meet the third Thursday of each month at 8:00AM. Starting point is Bldg # 1514, Driving Range Tee, Eagles Pride Golf Course, I-5 Exit 116, Mounts Road Exit. Upcoming walks include the following:

* December 15

Wood Duck  31     Split between a group at the 9th hole pond and Hodge Lake. Distance separation between ponds made a duplicate sighting very unlikely. Accurate counts were recorded. The photo is of the flock at Hodge Lake (with some Mallards). Note: We have had over 40 at the 9th hole pond alone in the past.

Pied-billed Grebe  5     One at 9th hole pond; adult and 3 peeping juveniles at Hodge Lake.

Belted Kingfisher  1     Flying over the fairway near the driving range. This is a seldom-seen species at Eagles Pride.
