[Tweeters] Poverty Bay/Redondo Beach Herring Run?

I happened to be running an errand that took me by Redondo Beach just now. There were possibly 1000+ gulls. Many were Short-billed and Olympic/Western x Glaucous-winged gulls, but there were others that I couldn't discern (me without my binoculars).
Each (and every) gull, especially the smaller gulls, was whirling about from side-to-side daintily pecking at the water's surface. Is this the start of the herring run in this part of the Sound or is this some other smorgasbord?
