Hi all – For those wondering about sugar concentration, it might be helpful to know what Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology says:
“The normal mixture… is ¼ cup of sugar per cup of water. [But] During cold, rainy, or foggy conditions when fresh water is plentiful but birds need more energy, it’s fine to make the mixture ⅓ cup of sugar per cup of water. Concentrations of sugars in natural nectars vary within about that range.”

The key to increasing the sugar is to be sure fresh drinking water is also available. We put out a heated birdbath during freezing weather for just that reason. All the birds (not just hummers) appreciate it. 😊
