Looking up shrike behavior (inspired by that last post), I find Seattle Public Library has discontinued access to Birds of North America (on line) effective today. I'm not sure what that's about, but it may be related to ebird's offering it. If you submit some number (1,000?) of checklists a year, you get free access there, now. Bent's life histories are still freely available here: https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org
. (I found nothing about shrike distraction displays, but comments about their persistence at prey in the face of humans, and displays of wing and tail in threats. Apparently, they could be hard on canaries.)
Black-capped Chickadees excavating into their second week (ignoring a nest box).
