Hi Tweets,

Lots of bird action off of Point Defiance this past week. Today’s birds of special note were the immature Sabine’s Gull and the Common Tern. Why? Because Heather Vboril was the 9th person to reach 253 in Pierce County with these two fine birds! For achieving this she will now be enshrined in the eBird Pierce County Hall of Fame, heartily congratulated by her peers and receive a beverage of her choice (at least its not all words).

So if your Pierce County bird list is in need of more birds, this is a great time to go to Point Defiance and pick up some fall migrants. In Point Defiance, on 5 Mile Drive, the best overlooks in order are Dalco, Gig Harbor viewpoint (usually the best viewing and includes bathrooms) & Narrow’s Bridge viewpoint on this one way drive. The drive is open after 10 am M-F and after 1 pm on Sat & Sun. Prior to those hours it is open for pedestrians. You are about 100’ above the Narrows, so a scope is almost a must.

Seen the past week: Parasitic Jaeger, Sabine’s Gull, Franklin’s Gull, Common Tern, Red-necked Phalaropes and several hundred Bonaparte’s Gulls.

Good birding,
Marcus Roening
