Whenever I’m visiting my sister-in-law in San Antonio, I set aside one morning to bird Friedrich Wilderness Park, less than half an hour’s drive from center city. Lodging near the NW part of the beltway makes it easier—SR 87 goes directly to it. Especially in spring, when everyone is singing, both Golden-cheeked Warbler and Black capped Vireo are downright easy to find here. Lost Maples Natural Area is more than an hour further out from SA, but beautiful with great birds too. The GC warblers mostly in the riparian woods, the BC vireos largely higher upslope. On my last summer visit there last year, I had something like six or eight of each species, including BC Vireo feeding young. Other nice birds I’ve had there are Zone-tailed Hawk, Bell’s Vireo, Rufous-crowned Sparrow, Green Kingfisher, Painted Bunting, and LOTS of migrant eastern warblers. Know the BC Vireo call/song well, as there are something like eight vireo species there in spring!
