[Tweeters] The Road to Wenas

Hey Tweeters,

For those of you planning on making the annual trek to the Memorial Day
weekend camp out,(or anyone planning on going to Wenas), you will find a
very different place.

Audubon Road, the road off of North Wenas Road, has been recently graveled
to the end of the county road. From there to the road into the campground,
it is pretty much the rough and tumble road that it has always been, with
the exception of an impressive new elevated bridge creek side where the road
used to get flooded out annually. The road into the campground is
unrecognizable from the past. DNR may have hired the Army Corp of Engineers
for the design, but the road has been levelled and graded. Creekside, the
road drops off dramatically before sloping upward on the creek side. Along
the top of the slope felled trees have been placed parallel to the road. It
looks like a long tank trap. Posted along the slope creek side are signs
stating "No Camping". The other side of the road also has a drop off and is
a discouragement for vehicles to exit the road to find a camping location,
though there are a few places where this looks possible. If one wishes to
camp below the ridge, my advice would be to get off the road (left side)
near the entrance, and parallel the road. Because of the recent construction
and lack of rainfall, there is an overabundance of dust.

The road itself is a work of art. It is beautiful. One could ride a
bicycle on it. It goes all the way to the top at least (I only went as far
as where Hog Back Road levels off on the top of the ridge, so I don't know
how far the graded road actually goes).

My fear is that now that the road is in such great shape, campers will
migrate to the top of the ridge and lay waste to the beautiful fields of
lupine up there. I'm not sure what the thought process was for DNR except to
protect the creek from human intrusion. Maybe a long-term plan that includes
designated camping areas?
