Hello out there,
Today it became clear that the number of swan deaths at Crescent Lake
Wildlife Area is now substantial. We have a die-off that may be on the down
slide or perhaps still actively happening. What we do know is that at least
19 Trumpeter Swans appear to have died of lead poisoning. The lake is a
major roost site at this time of year. With the freeze and snow, swans may
have gone to nontraditional areas to feed and gotten lead shot or something
else is happening. The sad truth is that some birds are already out of the
area and may die along the way. We have no way of connecting those deaths
to this area and we will never know just how many swans got sick here and
moved north quckly.
For those of you out and about in the Snoqualmie/Snohomish valley area
please let me know if you find a single swan that appears in distress or is
dead. Also, if you have any observations of swans feeding in particular
fields or wetlands from early Feb through now please share them. We
(meaning WDFW, NWSCA and others) are wanting to know where these swans
picked up the lead shot.
Thank you for keeping an eye out and for sharing your sightings. Your
information may help us get closer to finding the source of lead.
