"These Snow Geese seem unlikely to be from the population that winters on the Skagit. Are they from the population that winters in Central California?"

Hi Rachel - Just to add to the conversation, some of "our" Skagit birds also go to the Sacramento valley to winter. When I was at Sacramento NWR at the end of February, I saw two red plastic neck collars in a flock of several thousand Snow Geese (couldn't read them at the distance..). The Refuge biologist noted that those were the collars placed on the geese at Wrangel Island in the Russian far north, and that they see them there pretty regularly.

I looked on the interwebs, and see that the Wrangel-Skagit birds even mix with the Hudson's Bay birds as far south as Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico.

I learn new stuff every day . . .
