Gary Wiles and I birded some new and old areas from Centralia to Toledo. We started with 32 degree temps and heavy fog in Centralia. We tried a spot along Airport Rd., but the fog proved to thick for viewing. So onward to Tucker Rd. where we scoped some open fields. Mostly VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS were seen. Our first stop was at Mission Bar Boat Launch. Pretty quiet for the most part, but we did have a small flock of BUSHTITS. We then proceeded to the Toledo Airport accessed off Buckley Rd. Here we had WESTERN MEADOWLARKS, CALIFORNIA SCRUB JAYS, a pair of NORTHERN HARRIERS, a flock of 25 Swans flying over, 1 NORTHERN SHRIKE, and 1 WHITE-TAILED KITE. Our next couple of stops were in Toledo and the County Park. We had GOLDEN-CROWNED and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, BREWER’S BLACKBIRDS, KILLDEER, 3 BALD EAGLES, COMMON MERGANSER, AMERICAN WIGEON, and a NORTHERN FLICKER. We explored Collins Rd. and found a nice clear cut with lots of snags. This was a definite stop and we were rewarded with a pair of WESTERN BLUEBIRDS. We pushed on to the Lone Hill Cemetery and picked up a STELLAR’S JAY, and a flock of PINE SISKINS. A distant warbler call was briefly heard, but could not get it to call again. We then dropped down into Layton Prairie and found a SAY’S PHOEBE on Templeton Rd. After checking a few more open fields we returned back to the Toledo Airport and refound the Shrike and Kite. We headed back the Centralia and stopped back at the Airport Rd. in Chehalis and found lots of waterfowl, mostly AMERICAN WIGEONS, and 1 EURASIAN WIGEON. After departing from Gary, I made a stop at the Steam Plant along Big Hanaford Rd. and had 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS.
To quote Marv, “It was a good day.”
