Those of you who have visited the Millet Pond on Northshore Drive in
western Walla Walla County have seen the great habitat there. After
several years of trying for SWAMP SPARROW in the fall we FINALLY hit the
jackpot - found FOUR of these birds today. It was warm, sunny and calm
and all the birds were very vocal. The distinctive chip note of this
sparrow is very noticeable among the many White-crowned and Song
Sparrows. One bird was cooperative and let us take photos. Several
Lincoln's and Golden-crowned Sparrows were also very vocal - fun to
listen to all the different chip notes (and a few were even singing).
This area is heavily hunted but NO hunting after 12 noon - which is
nice! There was a Greater Yellowlegs, 2 Dunlin, 2 Long-billed
Dowitchers, 18 Wilson's Snipe and 17 Killdeer there.
At the Blood Pond 3 Pectoral Sandpipers are still present.
Warm enough for butterflies, dragonflies and even a mosquito today -
Good birding, M&ML
