Westport Seabirds’ next pelagic trip is scheduled for Saturday, May 20. This is a great time to see breeding plumage seabirds, many making their way to northern islands and the tundra. This includes Loons, Sabine’s Gull, Arctic Terns, Red Phalaropes and Jaegers. It’s also a good time to see local breeders such as Tufted Puffin, Leach’s and Fork-tailed Storm Petrels. Presumed close by breeders such as Manx Shearwaters and Ancient Murrelets have been seen on several of our May trips.
Rarities including Laysan Albatross, South Polar Skua (for this time of year), Murphy's Petrel (7 in 2011), a sighting of a Mottled Petrel also in 2011 and Horned Puffin have been seen in May.
