I would second what Gary said about Jack Jeffrey. I volunteered for a week
planting Koa trees at Hakalau NF in the late 1990s, and, as a reward, Jack
gave us a bird and flora tour of the refuge one day. We were able to see
every extant species of native forest bird that inhabited the refuge. If I
remember correctly, he used to be a National Park ranger. He's also an
amazing photographer. I've seen his photos in several magazines and books
over the years.
