Subject: avian field technician position openings

The Center for Natural Lands Management (CNLM) is hiring three to four Avian Field Technicians to assist on bird monitoring projects in prairie and oak habitats at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) in the South Puget Sound region of Washington State. Projects include: 1) demographic monitoring of the Federally Threatened streaked horned lark and western bluebird; 2) radio-telemetry and GPS tagging of larks and bluebirds, and 3) breeding bird community study in prairie and oak woodlands. Primary duties will include mapping territories, finding and monitoring nests, re-sighting color-banded birds, conducting behavioral observations, conducting bird surveys (point counts and line transects), sampling vegetation, and entering data. Technician may also assist with mist-netting, banding bluebirds, and applying GPS tags and radio-transmitters using leg loop method.

Field work will be conducted at prairie training sites and active airfields on JBLM. Technician will clearly collect data, meticulously manage it, and be detail oriented in observation and documentation. The technician should be able to identify local grassland and oak bird species by sight and ear, or quickly learn. The technician will work closely with supervisors to communicate information about status and location of lark nests to site managers. Successful applicants should have a keen interest in avian research and conservation, demonstrate excellent communication skills, be able to work independently and in a team setting, and be comfortable working on an active military base. Previous experience working with birds is preferred, but not required.

Positions run from 11 April to early-August. Pay rate is $14-16/hr, DOE. Application deadline: Open until filled, but for fullest consideration please apply no later than March 15, 2016.
