Hi Tweets - Well, yes, I'd hoped that while writing that sad tweet about missing all my targets today, the bird gods would respond by causing that errant Scissor-tail to fly into view. No such luck... But! As I cruised sadly westward along the interminable straightness of SR 24, I recalled a tweet of a couple weeks ago (don't remember, off hand, who made it but, Thank You!!) about seeing Common Nighthawks day-roosting in trees at the Vernita rest area. So, I stopped there for a look. Walking across the (well irrigated) grass toward what looked like the first likely tree, a black locust, I almost immediately saw a Nighthawk perched diagonally across a relatively small branch. (I'm wondering if the 90-degree heat made them more prone to sidesaddle perching to get more air circulation?). Certainly, this bird and the 10 or more others I found in almost every Robinia in the place, were mostly quite visible, in the shade on the east side of their perch tree. In any case, I had not seen this bird this year in Washington (or elsewhere) and it made a nice number 900, for species seen (globally) this year! So, I guess the message is - If at first the bird gods frown, keep the faith, keep on looking, and, something good will show up! - Jon Houghton, Edmonds
