[Tweeters] Tweeters vs. Comcast

A couple of weeks ago, I didn't receive my Tweeters Digest, as has happened several times in the past. I use Comcast email. I corresponded with Hal Opperman, who was, at the time, subbing for Dan Victor as the Tweeters admin. Though he was unable to do anythingto remedy my problem from his end, I wrote to another Tweeter, who agreed to try to forward her digest that day, to me. It worked, i.e. I received all the posts, but in a strange way - they came to me as 19 separate attachments - not ideal, but OK for this Deihl. I shared this success with Hal and he then tried to forward me the same day's digest - it came, but loaded with messed-up formatting and Hal said he'd never do that again - I was his test subject ! Then he sent me the following comments:

Barb,

The listserv software application the UW uses (Mailman) is very old and, I believe, no longer fully supported. But the tech world continues to evolve. More and more incompatibilities are surfacing as the years go by — mostly just a minor annoyance so far. I doubt the UW will switch to a more up-to-date program before Mailman becomes effectively useless. Nice thing about Mailman for them and for us is that it is free. Migrating to a new application would be very costly. Public-service lists such as Tweeters might not survive the changeover if some department or another had to pay to run them.

Hal

Looks like things may not get any better before Tweeters disappears for good ? It's always about $, isn't it ?

Good luck to all of us who use and like the Tweeters mode of communication with each other about birds and such...

Thanks to all of you who have shared your thoughts, findings and techniques re: Comcast and spam issues. Each helps one or more of us cope with the technology...

And, a BIG note of appreciation for all the fun and help, comraderie and education I have experienced throughout my 7 or so years of using the WA Tweeters List. Thanks.

I'll likely be one who hangs on until the last Tweeter tweets :-)
