Tweets,

Yesterday 30+ of us enjoyed a great day at Nisqually. We had a 12.8 high
tide at 8:54 AM and the birds cooperated! It was cool but clear all morning
and we had several great views of some great birds.

We started with a RIVER OTTER at the visitor center that flushed a GREEN
HERON that we got to observe several times on the way out to the twin
barns. The HERON offered great looks from the freshwater wetland overlook.

Our initial goal was to head quickly out to the new dike while the tide was
in to look for shorebirds but we kept getting sidetracked for flocks of
passerines in the willows. We had YELLOW WARBLERS all over the refuge and
had a few WILSON'S WARBLERS and BLACK-THROATED GRAYS mixed in with them. We
also had several WARBLING VIREOS and both CHICKADEES as well as BUSHTIT and
DOWNEY WOODPECKER as well.

When we did got out on the dike we had WESTERN and LEAST SANDPIPERS and
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER. The birds of the day were also out in the reclamation
area...a WHIMBRAL and 2 LONG-BILLED CURLEW. The WHIMBRAL was new for the
year but the CURLEW continue to hang around.

Raptors seen were BALD EAGLE, RED-TAILED HAWK, NORTHER HARRIER, PEREGRINE
FALCON, and AMERICAN KESTRAL.

For the day I had 51 species and now have 133 for the year. the only mammal
noted was the RIVER OTTER at the visitor center pond.

Until next week when Shep and Eric lead....
