Today I was made aware of a problem created by at least 2 hot air balloon companies who want to give their passengers a thrill in the Snohomish Valley area.
On at least 3 occasions, two different hot air balloons were observed coming up over Lord Hill (south of Snohomish) and then down toward the river and then down into the Bob Heirman Wildlife Park. The altitude was significantly less than the 500 ft minimum required by FAA. The balloons (only one each day) were observed coming directly over the lake at the park, very low. Last night a family of swans and thousands of ducks scattered at its approach. The the balloon lifted up to clear the trees and moved on. This has happened twice in the past 3 days.

Not only is this a violation of FAA regulations, it is wildlife harassment, a federal wildlife violation. Both balloons have been identified and ownership established. I have requested intervention by the authorities to help educate these folks so that this is stopped and does not happen again.

Please, if you see hot air balloons coming closer than 500 ft to the ground or buildings in a rural area, take a photo and report them. If you see a balloon coming in and harassing wildlife, take a photo and report that to the poaching hotline: 1-877-933-9847 for non emergencies. For an in-progress case dial 911 and ask for wildlife enforcement.
