Morning temps back in the low 50s but the sun never came out to warm things up. Bird activity was a little subdued, partly because it is the summer doldrums but the impending rain may have had an effect. Nothing unusual except the Beaver in Promontory Pond who kept slapping its tail for several minutes mid-morning. The continuing drought has even dried up Crescent Pond leaving only Promontory Pond and downstream with water.

Common Merganser - a female with 5 young lounging on a log by the shore; another pair out in the lake
Pied-billed Grebe - the female in the Dead-end Pond today had only 3 young with her; two even younger birds were alone in Promontory Pond
Cooper’s Hawk - the young have mostly left the nest; one bird was calling from somewhere on the Point
Bald Eagle - 2 first year birds were making sorties over the park
Ring-billed and California Gull - several; seems like all gull activity is now centered over the NOAA shore
Band-tailed Pigeon - 1 fly-over that eventually roosted in the neighborhood at S end
Barn Owl - at least two; west and east meadows
Vaux’s Swift - a least a couple with the VG Swallows
Pacific-slope Flycatcher - Promontory Point

In keeping with multi-year averages where July is the month with the lowest diversity, only 41 species for the day.
