Ellen and I took a little detour off US-12 just a couple miles east of Oakville and birded Howanut Rd.on the Chehalis Indian Reservation. From the bridge, looking downstream (west) she spotted a Green Heron foraging on Oregon Ash logs and branches sticking out in the beautiful Black River. We scoped this bird spearing prey from the streamside logs. North, off in the distance about 100 yards, we heard a Red-eyed Vireo, a new bird for my Grays Harbor County list, singing away from cottonwoods in the mid-day heat.

This is a new site for us, which Ellen discovered while studying the DeLorme Atlas. There seems to be very little traffic along Howanut Rd.so birding from the bridge was pleasant and rewarding.
