I don't have any hummingbird feeders (sadly). But I have seen a female Anna's around a bunch. My grandparents up in Newcastle have quite a few hummingbirds, at least 6 Anna's and at least 3 Rufous that come to their feeder. Rufouses (that is how you pluralize it, right) are THE COOLEST!!!! I love watching them boss around the Anna's :)
I think that if hummingbirds are leaving, that a sound idea of why would be the one proposed that the heat is too much and they are relocating to higher elevations. I haven't seen any evidence of their leaving myself, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were. I'm sure they have a good reason for it too. Birds are very smart, and we don't know everything that goes on in their minds.
