The problem with people regardless of group size is that people are just noisy. It is my thought that when trying to observe or photograph wildlife, one should approach as quietly as possible, and be watching the subject to see if they are noticing you or reacting to your presence. Dragging your feet on the ground and kicking rocks around makes A LOT of noise. Also it is not a good time to discuss camera gear or previous birding experiences when close to a sensitive subject.
